Okay I have a 1989 SHO, MTX and love it. Problem I am having is that occasionally it lets out a puff of blue smoke, sometimes small somtimes large and sometimes I can drive an entire trip without it happening. Here's the deal. I had the oil changed and they did an engine flush which I must have been half asleep on my thinking because I know never to do that because components can come unseated with carbon getting knocked off the cylinder walls and such. About a week after I'm driving a long, I punch it and I see a large pile of blue smoke coming out of the exhaust. I only have 150000 km or 90000 miles on the clock (I live in Vancvouer, BC, Canada, everything up here is metric) My oil consumption naturally increased and I am for ever topping up the oil. But this only happens occasionally, sometimes I don't have to be at high rpm, it will do this after I start the engine, sometimes it will do it after about 5 minutes of driving at a low RPM and sometimes if i am going down a steep hill this will happen. Now I refuse to beleive it is anything that is a big deal like a whole engine rebuild like every mechanic I am taking it to is telling me. I put the bardall oil treatment in and keep doing this once a week and this problem is actually slowly going away. Maybe the carbon deposits are slowly building back and the engine is re-seating. The oil treatment has restored the power and prevented the blow by it seems. - what is everyones experience with this?
I am also getting a clicking sound out of the top end of the engine (left rear side of engine), which sounds like a valve problem to me. - what is everyones experience with this
So I am thinking my next step is to have a valve job done, but all the mechanics are saying they don't want to do the top end without doing the bottom end because if I fix a valve blow by I will end up having too much pressure coming into the rings and then I wil have a ring problem say 3 months from now - What is everyones experience with this?
Also does anyone know a good mechanic in the Vancouver, Canada area who actually knows what they are talking about with these engines? The ford dealers keep telling me this is the first one they have had in for service and they'll do a "little tune up and rotate the tires and check the brakes" -- so I am not taking it to them! Other places sort of have a clue but don't want to touch the engine and I know there are only a handfull of these cars in the Vancouver area.
Thanks a lot everyone for your help.
BTW mine is a 1989 Titanium color MTX. I replaced the basket weave tires with 17" rims and have 235, 45 profile tires on it. The 235's just fit into the wheel wells. I'm getting the eibach springs for the front end, they have a set that will drop the front end 1", going to replace the brake disks with a cross drilled set, and have replaced the fog lights with small round Hella driving lights which make the car look so much better. The shifter **** is now a chrome/carbon fibre unit. New stereo will be added soon. i'll add a pic when I get a chance
