Broken evaporative emission control valve?

Okay. While replacing the Fuel pump in my '99, My dad broke the "evaporative emission control valve" or something to that affect. I don't know what it is called, but.. I can't seem to find anything online for a replacement, mainly because I don't know what it is called (He guessed that name up) we need it because it's throwing the check engine light on, and eating gas like mad. it's on/near the gas tank with two to four hose connections and about the size of the palm of your hand. any idea what the part name is, so I can get a new one?
