ok, i got this car not too long ago, Its a 95 MTX, and well...Whenever i slowly come to a stop, the brakes (sounds like under dash) make a ratcheting noise....then FORCES my car to stop lol talk about strange luck. well anyways, ive searched but havent found much similiar. This happened when i got it and after i put new rotors and pads on and cleaned the abs equipment. Its kinda like...the less force on the brake...the faster itll stop when it does this. and its only when i am gradually coming to a stop.... any help is GREATLY appreciated (since this IS my DD now ,lol) :thumb:

sounds like the abs is screwed up or something. Maybe the module up front is bad?

EDIT: this is the thing im talking about, its near the air box

There's a separate 'ABS' light for when the ABS computer thinks something is wrong. It could be that the lamp for that has failed...you should see it at startup.

I am inclined to say it is not your booster save your money. What is probably the case is the abs tone ring is cracked or missing. This causes false actuation of the abs system. It will not set a code or light due to the system thinking it is acting right. Look on the front axles to see if the tone rings are broken. Hope this helps

Just run the codes for the abs. It may help you track down which wheel specifically has a bad part like the tone ring or sensor. The abs computer will tell you erratic output or no signal for each wheel.

if your car doesn't have that light on, odds are its the booster.

You're basing your diagnosis on a SHO Shop catalog? :nut:

Yeah, just get rid of any tools you own. :shakehead

The fact that they couldn't even spell LOSES properly really gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling that their automotive diagnostic skills. Not.

I've worked on over a thousand SHO's, and replaced a whopping two brake boosters. They are not a common failure point, and I'd be much more inclined to agree with Chuck that the ABS rings are the best place to start.

01SVTSnakebite, you can isolate the ABS system as the cause or not by simply disabling it (just remove the connector from the top of the computer and test drive the car). If the problem goes away, it's ABS-related, if it's not, it's elsewhere and we can help you diagnose from there.

Basic diagnostics are an amazing thing!

Yep, just lift the metal retaining lever and remove the connector. The ABS computer is pictured above.

Nothing dangerous about the plug, but obviously you don't want to be disabling your ABS system and test-driving the car during a snowstorm or other bad weather.

Anything wrong with disconnecting the ABS computer and leaving it that way for now? My ABS light has been on since I got my car, ABS definitely isn't working, but I don't have the time or money to fix it right now. Even though it would be nice to have ABS, I can deal without it right now, and it sure would be nice to get that annoying ABS light off on my dash.

There is a shorting bar in the ABS computer connector that sets the light when the connector is removed, so that will not make your light go away. You'll have to pull the bulb in the cluster, or just figure out why it's on. You can pull ABS codes the same way you pull EEC codes.
