Okay I finallly installed the stereo I have been wanting and it sounds awesome but my car doesn't have enough juice to power it under mid volume. My car flickers with the bass pretty bad. Don't want to **** this wimpy Alternator without a replacemant in hand. Does anybody else offer uprated alternators besides CincySHO? They sell a powdercoated 150A high output one for $215 plus shipping. But they are very hard to get ahold of. Also I want to put a Optima battery in it too but I can't get a yellow top out here. They don't ship them overseas because they are hazardous. I can get the red or blue tops ones though from my local shop. Can I use a Blue top in my car with no ill effects? BTW Here are my stereos specs.

Yes, bass. Thats a clean set up. I too was looking to upgrade my alternator when I got my new system in. For now, the Red Top Optima battery is holding up though, and my amp draws out 120 amps (probably only at max though) and im not running a cap. what head unit are you using?

JVC KD-SH55. My CD player in the car is only temporary until I get my new indash DVD player, possibly clarion, pioneer, kenwood, alpine... But with the 3 required high volt preouts it get the job done quite well.

You shouldnt be flickering under those conditions. My system pushes more and it doent flicker. What are the wire specs? CincySHO isnt doing much anymore. You would be better off getting a stock amp and having it rebuilt for higher output.

the wiring is a Rockford fosgate 4ga dual amp kit complete with dist. blocks and gold battery terminal. As soon as the car gets here I am purchasing an Optima Blue top for it. I cannot have batteries shipped here due to them being hazardous and weight reqs. My local auto store on base has the red tops and blue tops. I was unable to obtain the yellow top that I wanted before the car was shipped out. Maybe my alternator is just crapping out on me also. I have a Fosgate 1.5 farad cap in the mix as you can see.

Any ideas? Are the 93' alternators rated at 70A, 90A or 130A?

You can get a yellow top optima from the BX in Aviano for $150. I know that they can get any optima battery here to Italy but I am not sure of the price. Let me know if you want me to find out the price for you. Jason

When I didn't have the capictator in my system the lights would dim, then I go the cap and its been good since. I only have a half farad cap. It could be possible that you have too big of a cap, but I am not sure. You could just try a new alternator or see what yours is putting out. I would first check your current alternator to see if its doing its job.

The blue tops are made for marine use . It would work in a car but i would go with the red top which is made for better starting and for race cars or the yellow which is a deep cycle used for audio and offroading.

The stock 93 MTX is only 90 Amps.

94/95MTX is 130 Amps.

PAperformance sells a 200 Amp alternator for the SHO for around $300. Brand new (no core) & I believe warrentied for life.

I'm running one of the older power 800a2 amps as well as a power 400a4, and I've got 3 12' JL Audios. I can run it wide open and not get light dimming unless the car is shut off.

Looks like the only way to get a 130 amp alternator in a '93 is to use one from a '94/'95.

Has anybody done it correctly? I would be very interested in doing it.

throw the cap away and put a second battery in the trunk . i had 2 orion 275g4 and 2 h2 15 at 1 ohm each and that eqauls 360 amps of fuse on amps alone and 8 4 gauge power wires had gain at max and very little flicker at all . keep in mind a cap is a small storage device it takes time to charge . example its like putting 2 gas tanks in a car and having one pump to the other then to motor.

I have a quick question... My neighbor is putting a ~1000-1200 watt (forgot what he said) amp in his 93 ATX. Will the stock alt. handle this? Sorry I just don't know a lot about stereos...

Ya it'll handle it without a problem. The 140amp alternator in a stock ATX is more then enough. You have to look at other cars and see that most put much smaller alternators in them. I run over 2000 watts with a stock alternator and a 5 farad power cap. You can pickup caps for under $100 brand new. Send me a private message for a website that sells them at dirt cheap prices (like $40 for a 1 farad one and $60 for a 3 farad). Under 1000 watts I don't see a need to have a cap. Stock alternator should be just fine. If you start to have issues with your lights dimming, etc, then add a cap.

The stock '93 ATX alternator is 120 amps.

In my case, the problem with the stock 90 amp '93 MTX alternator is when it gets maxed out.

For example: You get caught in a rainstorm, at night, during rush hour traffic. You have the A/C, headlights, winshield wipers, electric radiator fan, fuel pump, ignition, and stereo going at the same time, and your engine is idling as you creep home.

You are going too have to start turning things off. It has happened to me several times in my Bronco which has a 130 amp alternator, and I have seen the lights dimm.

The 90 amp alternator in my MTX will not handle that situation. I have a high power stereo in my SHO, and I would like to listen to it if I get caught in traffic. If you are cruising at 70 mph with the windows open, radiator fan off, A/C off, lights off, windshield wipers off, you can have your stereo going at full blast.

My advice is to upgrade.
