Best Buy Parking Lot Problems

I went to the Maplewood Best Buy to pick up a copy of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas today and when I came out to my car, it started but then seemed like it was about to die. The RPMs dropped and I rev'd it a lil to keep it alive. After about 10 seconds it was fine and idled fine on it's own. What's really strange is that it's never done this other then about 3 months ago when I went to the same Best Buy. It has never done this before other then these 2 times at the same Best Buy months apart. I know Best Buy screws their customer's, but there customer's cars too? shrug

Your "Fuel return line check valve" is going out. Mine is also and it is only noticeable under certain conditions. It is a valve on the fuel pump assembly that holds pressure in the fuel rail. When it goes bad the fuel will depressureize and (boil) because of the heat within your fuel rail. So, this is only noticeable when your engine is noticeably hot. For instance just pulling off the freeway won't do it because the motor is realatively cool because plenty of air was cooling. But, after a ton of town driving it will heat up quite a bit and cause problems if that valve is wearing out.

So, after all that that valve is probably your problem. I don't have the part # on hand but it is only a few $, but does require the removal of the FP assembly.

My fuel pump was replaced less then 10K miles ago and I just cleaned my AIB less then a month ago. Like I said, it hasn't happened ANY other time, just at this perticular Best Buy.

I just had the 3M intake and fuel system cleaning system run through my car last week also so the intake should be pretty clean (though I am gonna take it off to clean it this summer).

wood_e, I just installed my AL SFB's and I love them. I'm sure you will too. Lemme know if ya need some help as I live farley close to ya. We should meet up sometime this summer.

AIB? You mean IAB valve? I would replace it, if you continue to get the same problem. Sometimes even a complete cleaning will not fix an IAB problem.

it isn't his IAB...simple as that...

it IS your check valve...lots of people have this problem. Start saving for an upgraded fuel pump and all the necessary hardware to go with it....

Sure, this summer I'll be pretty free. Yeah my AL SFBs are sitting at my dads palce... just waiting to be put in... soooo shiny I'll probably take the initiative to get them in over my spring break. wink I'll let you know if I get stuck.

As for your problem I think its probably your check valve as well. The trick is to cycle they key twice or so so the fuel pump fully pressurizes the system. If you do that it should start fine. I know my check valve is on the fritz... must be something with the "rare green" wink

As long as you 2 guys are meeting up I am also in Minnesota up by duluth and would not mind having a little Minnesota meeting. I know someone down by the cities who would I'm sure be very interested in a meeting and I might even be able to get another guy who owns a Gen III to show up. Maybe we could have a track day or something? I'm sick of seeing no other SHO enthusiasts around here and would like to have some sort of meeting.

Just because your fuel pump was replaced does not mean that your check valve was replaced. The fuel pump and check valve are two totally different pieces. If you took it apart and put on a higher flow FP then you probably didn't replace the valve, which I bet is what you did (cuz I did the same thing). The valve is your problem.

I said I was looking for one to buy and couldn't find one I liked, they said "even after running 50 cars!". And I like said, "Ummm, I'm really picky and I'm looking all around the country". I need to cool it for a while.

I don't think that you can automatically assume that it is the check valve. I replaced my check valve along with the fuel pump a little while ago and I am still having a very similar problem.

A sticky IAB valve will take a few seconds to become operational. During idle problems, if blipping the throttle helps keep the motor running, the IAB is a definate a candidate. And they do not simply die. Sometimes they die slowely, and exibit random symptoms. Sometimes they work great, othertimes not so great.

Bad IAB = not enough air supplied for correct idle.
Blipping the throttle opens the throttle body, supplying a bit of air to keep the motor alive.

Sure, similar symptoms exist with fuel delivery problems, but as I said, rule out the IAB first.
