I have a 93 ATX and if I'm not mistaken my car has the AX4N and I guess the GEN 3 uses the 4S (correct me if I'm wrong). I was just wondering if you could bolt the GEN 3 tranny to the GEN 2. Which transmission is better built in your guys' opinion???

I think someone here said it before that it doesn't work. I'm pretty sure the bolt pattern is completely different.

You are not mistaken, and no it will not work. The 4S is a little better built for a few small reasons but the bolt pattern is different. You'll have a heckuva time making it work!

Actually, the 93-95 use the AX4S, and the gen3 uses AX4N. The shift control programming is substantially different between the "S" and the "N".

In my experience, the 94-95 atx is the best of the bunch - most of the gen3 cars need trans work by 100k miles or so, and most of the 94-95 were still working long past that.

You can put the 94-95 atx in your 93, you just need to swap the torque converter with the trans, as the trans input shaft has a different number of splines.

the 96+ trans is a different bolt pattern then the 86-95 trans. the 96+ has a 5 gear planetary instead of a 4 gear one like the 86-95 has which is a common failure point. the gears in the 96+ are a bit stronger also. I can't speak on the clutch size but they are not large enough i the 86-95 if you want to make really big power. I think a really high 11 sec pass is possible but that is about it.

to answer your question mr. OP no the transmissions are not interchangeable
