atx shifting

my 95 atx has a down shifting problem, after slowing down, when i attepmt to accelerate, the car jerks when the gear comes in. it seems the car is looking for the gear, and then when it finds it, it feels almost violent when the gear goes in, it jerks really hard.

any ideas? BTW my car has 75k miles, rebuilt trannie(has the same problem before rebuilding) and totally stock otherwise.

Go get the trany serviced and inspected, new filter flush and new fluid. The ATX is known for its shifting and weakness. Several sensors in the tranny can cause shifting problems. Also try the search function we've beat this subject around like a dead horse. Same thing with the CPS (CKP).

When you say slow down, do you mean slow to a stop (like at a red light?) My atx does that sometimes... you can do two things to try to reduce the damage:

1) manually shift to 1st when stopping
2) goose the throttle a bit to get the car back into gear

#2 helps me when I don't feel like fiddling with the shifter... if you just give a quick tap to get the revs up about 500 or so, it should let the transmission slide back into Drive without causing it to slam into gear.

I've heard that you could put synthetic motor oil in the transmission (and that's it's suggested in a rebuild kit, too).. don't know how valid that is and I'm curious to know if maybe Sdpatt knows anything about this...

Your VSS (Vehicle speed sensor) might be on its way out too... those are a **** to replace, by the way.
