does anyone kno if the gen3 tranny will fit a normal taurus gl of the same year? ive been reading up and it looks like they are both either AXOD or AX4S or AX4N. ive read that all these trannys are basically the same except for the new internal designs and lubercation and stuff.... any help would be great. i have a 97 taurus gl vulcan with a bad tranny at only 65,000miles, dam shame. thanks -ryan

There are some differences. The SHO tranny has extra clutch packs, no VSS, and 3.77 gears. You can't switch 4S with 4N or vice versa either. Basically you need to find a direct replacement for your tranny.

It's an AX4N, but it's not the same as the SLO AX4N as I mentioned. The Duratec engines all got the AX4N, and a few Vulcans as well; however, most Vulcans got the AX4S. You can tell which tranny you have several ways. First, the pan on the bottom of the tranny will say AX4S, AXOD Metric (also AX4S), or AX4N. Also, The AX4S has a 17-bolt pan while the AX4N has a 19-bolt pan. Finally (and most easy), you can look at the driver's door sticker - In the box with the heading "TR", A first letter of "X" is an AX4N, while a first letter of "L" is an AX4S.

A V8 SHO tranny will never work with your Vulcan. A V6 SHO tranny will, but you'll ideally need a chip or tuner to compensate for the differences.

so if it is a AX4N in my GL what would i have to do to make the SHO AX4N work with it, i know the gearing will be different, which is good, lol. but yeah im mostly trying to make it bolt up to my Vulcan. if there really is not a possible way, could i ripp out a full engine and tranny out of a gen3 and put it in my GL? would there be a issue with the bolting and fitment of it and/or half axles. i know i would have to change out some wiring and ecu stuff too

Re-design the Vulcan bellhousing pattern and you're good to go! :thumb:

The V8 drivetrain will fit in the gen 2 chassis, but nobody has put one in a GL yet. Let us know how it works out.
