Anyone have Kumho Ectsa 712's?

These tires are cheap. Anyone have any input? If my prospective buyer can't buy my car,I will be forced to put on some new tires. These are the least expensive of the high performance tires I can find, at $80 each.

What is the expected life range on these tires? I do drive aggressively burn_out

Funny you ask, I just purchased a set of four last weekend and they ride great. Good balance between handling and smoothness. I purchased the 225/55/16's and did not go larger. I'm glad I did.

I have about 9k miles on my set of 225/55-ZR16's (on a 2nd gen SHO) I couldn't be happier with the performance wet and dry, although snow leaves quite a bit to be desired, and after 9k miles of aggressive driving they are hardly showing any wear.

I just drove a '91+ with a set of 225/55-16 Ecsta Supra 712s on the original slicers, Tokico struts and Eibach springs. I must compare this to my '91 with the same struts and springs and a set of 225/55-16 Bridgestone RE730s on 7.5" wide Moda R1s. Yes, the Kumhos are cheap. Yes, you get what you pay for. Their transient response is very soft and their lesser lateral traction allows much higher slip angles during cornering.

With the Kumhos, you save a bit of cash, but you sacrifice a bunch of performance. For all the money that so many folks are willing to spend to upgrade their brakes and suspensions, it is the tires that are the ultimate limit of the car's attachment to the road. Don't be cheap on tires.

By the way, Kumho just came out with an "ultra high performance" MX that resembles the retired BFG Comp TA VR.

I have to agree with SDPAT just above. Mine came free on the wheels as part of the deal for the wheels, so I am using them, but frankly, they are not great. You can improve them somewhat by running them at their pressure maximums for the fronts, and a few pounds below for the rears, but I would never buy them again for my type of back road high speed driving, and as soon as the summer is over they go off to put some Bridgestone Potenzas back on. In fact, if you are determined to have a set, I will sell you mine. They have about 1000 miles on them, so they are virtually new. They are the z rated 17x245x45 size, and I will be happy to give you a deal so I can go back to Potenza's early.

Thanks for the replies,guys. See,the problem is, I am kinda strapped for cash at the moment,hence why the car is for sale. Any tire I put on there will have to be better than what is currently on the car. They were generic z-rated tires,and I can't even find them on the internet...not to mention that the inside edge on the right rear tire is as smooth as my desktop. I can't complian,tho. I got 26,000 miles out of them.

If money is an issue, why not drop down to a V-rated tire?
It might give you a wider selection of brands and prices.
I wouldn't go lower than V though.

The ones I am looking at are V-rated(up to 149mph)
They are around $80 each,plus shipping.

Jay, in the 17" config I have there are JUST AS GOOD as the Firestones. A real buy at a great cost for a great tire.

I ran Sumitt Point a month ago and they were awesome. I cant say enough about them. And you know how I drive, if you say your aggressive than I must be Wicked Super Aggressive and they hold up for me just fine

The 712s are fine for the money, but don't use them in cold (under 40-degree) weather, Owner reports, as well as the Tire Rack, will tell you that.

In that price range, I would recommend the Nitto 450 Extremes. Good price (check Discount Tire, they have Free Shipping on tires right now), the handle FANTASTIC in the wet (I have them on my 911), and they look cool. They are V-rated.

I have the 712s on my '97. The are 245/45/26 and I am quite pleased with them. Especially pushing SHOdwn around Summit Point earlier this year.

SDPatt: You are also running wider rims than the other guy. I know the tires may make a difference in how the car handles,but if doing a comparison,shouldn't you have the same wheels?Just an observation.

Since I have several deciding factors, I will be ordering the Kumho's in 225/55/VR rated this am. I can't wait to see the difference between the new tires and the baloney skins I have mounted now.

Funny, I just bought a set for the SR71 for street use. Basically just rubber to take me from house to track and back
