Hi guys im new to sho forums and i have had my 93 atx for about a month now. Ive done a lot of reading in these forums and have found lots of info on one of the codes im throwing which is the 332 EGR code. I have found many resources on how to resolve this and will be doing it soon. The other code my car is sending is the 648 (incorrect gear ratio obtained for fourth gear). I found very little info on this code and im curious as to if anyone else has this problem or has delt with it in the past. What would cause this code and is this a major problem that i should have looked at? Also if anyone has delt with this any idea of the repair costs? thanks if anyone can help me out id really appreciate it.

thanks
Byron

Welcome to the Forum!

Only time I've heard of this was from a SHO owner way back, he had to disconnect the battery and reset the idle. When looking up on the code, I remember something about the things we found, like "obey traffic laws".

Anyways, the problem went away when he did the following stated.

An improper gear ratio code, means there is an internal transmission problem. How does it shift into 4th?

the funny thing is that it seems like it wont shift into fourth unless im off the gas. I can take the car up to 90 or higher and it will not shift into fourth unless i let off. is that normal? seemed odd to me. my previous car was a 00 eclipse 4 speed auto and it always shifted into 4th early unless i was down on the gas. Is that just the way this O/D transmission works?? if this isnt normal operation that may be my problem :nut:

Overdrive is just another word for 4th gear. Your KM in your eclipse was an overdrive unit too.

It is time to rebuild your transmission.

thanks for the info mike. i figured that O/D was exactly the same as 4th gear its just that in the eclipse it didnt say anything about O/D. Outside of the problem i stated the transmission seems to operate fine. Can i continue to drive the car until the transmission gets worse, or is this something that should be fixed asap. Also what is the average cost of a rebuild on one of these transmissions?

thanks

Anywhere from $1000-$2500 and maybe more. It just depends on what is broken and/or needs replacement.

Just a fleeting thought, Byron, but have you checked (or had any past codes for) your TSS (Turbine Speed Sensor)?

No i havent, the only codes i have had since i bought the car are 211 332 648. from what i understand the 211 is most likely the cps, and i know about the egr nostrils for the 332 code. What is the TSS?? And how would i go about checking it? never heard of that. and could it possibly be related to my problem? thanks for the reply

PS: did you mean transmission instead of "turbine"?

While I was referring to the "book" name, the TSS can go by either. ;)

Unfortunately, I don't have the diagnostic procedure(s) for checking this sensor handy. To answer your Q, though, it is at least somewhat possible (due to the way the EEC uses the data fed to it by the TSS) that this sensor is to blame for your 648 DTC and subsequent tranny behavior. Again, this is only a thought and not a given.

Perhaps someone can chime in with the Helm's diagnostic data for the TSS and/or 648 DTC?

interesting :corn:

sorry i didnt know if that was correct or not, did a search on the TSS and saw you had refered to it as the transmission speed sensor in another thread... im very interested to hear more about this sensor hoping it could be a possible cause for my problem. as the alternative being a rebuild is something i definately cannot afford for a while...

thanks

My SHO kept throwing an EGR code too. I took off the throttle body off and inside there were two small holes that were completely coked up. When I cleaned those out using carb cleaner, an allen wrench and a strait paper clip. No more code after that. If that doesn't work you could go the more expensive route by replacing the EGR Valve.
Hope this helps.
