Hi

I have been a lurker for the last few months as I work to try and restore a 1990 with lots of problems. I am new to working on cars so its been a slow going but fun learning process.

Well now I have hit a snag. I need to do the emergency brakes and cant find any instructions. I did the usual search but didn't find what I need, and the autozone instructions leave me dumbfounded. So anyone have any step by steps? or a link maybe?

Thanks folks

What do you need to do regarding the emergency brake? One cable runs from the pedal to a coupler under the chassis where 2 cables run-- one to each caliper. Where does your problem lie?

The problem I know about is with where the cables attatch to the calipers on both sides, the little connecty part on one of the cables is broken and one cable is rusted so it wont move. The calipers are brand new (did those two weeks ago).

I dont yet know if the cable from the pedal down is bad. And it's snowing/raining something feirce here today so I am not going to go outside and check :)

What do you think the price range would be to fix a broken E-brake. When i got my sho, ford said the cables are 'frozen' and it would cost 1000$ to fix. I would NEVER pay that much to get the e brake fixed, assuming that the cables are actually frozen/not working i have NO idea...300-500$?? please help shrug

I got mine for like $100, maybe $80 (can't remember exactly) from one of the sho vendors here. Unfortunately it is ONLY a Ford part. Took maybe an hour to do it... can't really remember that either doh
$1000 sounds about right from the STEALership... about $700 too much (if they replaced BOTH cables)

Maybe I was a little off. Fordpartsnetwork.com appears to have them for under $50 each... check it out thumb

WAIT! No need to waste money on the Ford parts.

Perfectly good aftermarket brake cables are available for $13 each if you order them from Rockauto.com

I bought and used Wagner F129200 for the left (driver's side) and an F129201 for the other side.

Raybestos #s are BC94589 for the left and BC94588 for are also available for the SHO. These numbers are from Raybestos' site.

If you order from Rockauto, put the following discount code in the box that asks "How did you hear about us?" for an instant 5% discount : 6184428085 valid through 12/7/03.

If needed, Pepboys carries them. Maybe in the $20-30 range if I recall. Not sure on the price. Also I don't know about the main pedal cable, but the one I needed they carried. I thought I needed one for my driver's side, but didn't and returned it.

hey thanks again for everyones help
i got them in with very few problems

one tip and one question

tip:
to get the old left cable out from where it connects to the right cable, you can see the clip easily if you put a light shineing back into the hole and then look at a 90 degree angle from the driver side of the car and you will see a little hole right by the clip, a flat head screwdriver will barely fit in the hole and it will be quite easy to pry off the clip. (hope that makes sense- the other instructions said that this was the hard part, but its easy if you put the light and then look from the side)

question:
i noticed that my e-brake does not have the C-Clip to attach it to the caliper on the passanger side, i know it is supposed to, but it was missing and i cant find one at napa or autozone.
any help??
