Hi everyone, I'm new here, well... I lurk all the time. I managed to spell my username wrong, so don't give me too much of a hard time. :D Anyway... I am the proud owner of a 1993 MTX Green SHO with Silver Lettering... I love my car, I really do, and it hates me or something.

Anyway, here is the problem...

On Thursday I noticed that as my car warmed up my power steering started to fail. I work at Sears so I had the autoguys look at it and they said my power steering fluid was a little low. So they filled it up and held it in the shop to look for leaks for my powersteering... There wasn't any.

So I tell my dad and he's friends with a guy that works on semi's. Well he said that it could be because the belt is loose. So my dad checks the belt... well, there was anti-freeze on that bold on the block kind of underneath the altenator...

So my dad checks into it further, and somewhere there is anti-freeze hitting my powersteering belt cause it to slip. Has anyone had this happen... I'm thinking it's serious... it's going to the mechanic anyway tomorrow. So... any thoughts...

A common failure after about 80-100k is the water pump. It will start a small drip which will eventually land on your crank position sensor and cause it to fail. If you get under the car you may be able to see the leak at the water pump. There are a couple coolant lines in that area that might be leaking too. If you have not done the water pump/60k recently, you might want to start thinking about it. There are many threads you can search for more info.

Good luck on reconcilliation with your car.

I dont know that the H20 pump would cause water to flick onto the assessory belt would it? Worth the check though.

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you have a nice ride.

Thanks everyone... I'm pretty concerned still. I'm 19 years old, going to be twenty in less than two weeks. This is the one car I've dreamed of, but if it's anti-freeze going into the block, I won't be able to repair it... and that would suck, a lot.

Don't give up yet. Get the engine as dry as you can and get a flashlight go looking for the leak. I really doubt it is a problem with your block unless it froze and broke. More than likely it is a hose or the waterpump. Both which can be replaced. You may need to get a small mirror, but go looking for the leak as best you can.

Let us know what you find.

Trust me it will do this sometimes! When my H20 pump decided to go to crap it actually leaked enough fluid to throw the belt!

Luckily it did this only about 4 miles of highway from my home, so I managed to quickly limp home w/out the benefit of power steering....
Luckily when the belt flew off it landed on the subframe, so my when my mechanic came to get it we were able to slip it back on so he could drive it to his place...

Oh, please dont let them do all that work without replacing the crankshaft position sensor.... It is a common failure due to a leaky WP.

If it goes out (it will) you will be spending the labor all over again for a $50 part.

Oh, I talked to my mechanic... he's going to look at the belts and the crankshaft position sensor. He's pretty good with the SHOs... a lot better than the Ford crews ever were.
