Last night my starter died while sitting in front of AutoZone. I was getting new break pads for the front and when I went to leave, the damn thing would not start.

I just replaced the battery and had it checked...nope. Checked the connections...nope.

For the last couple of days the car has been hard to start, I thought it was the cold(about 2 degrees last night), guess not.

I picked up a new sarter (lifetime) from Advance auto for $110. (Ironic the car was at Autozone) took me about 45 minutes to swap it out.

The culprit was the durring the last oil change I got the new guy at the shop I go to and he didn't protect the starter when he removed the oil filter. He blamed it on someone using the wrong filter. I assured him that the FL1A was perfectly fine, we had to get the shop manager to step in durring the arguement.

Anyway I got them to pay for the starter and all is well now. Hope this one lasts a while.

I can't begin to fathom how letting some oil run down onto your starter would have caused your starter to go out.

I have the same starter that was in my car when I purchased it 10+ years ago. I change my oil every 3000 miles and my car has 170+K miles so either I'm just lucky or the oil doesn't harm the starter. All I do is wipe it off with a paper towel when I'm done.

Cpngrats on getting the shoip to pay for it.

Oil wont instantly **** a starter. Oil does not conduct electricity like water does. Only thing the oil will do is gum up the insides and cause faster ware on the internal parts.

Exactly. You jacked that shop by making them pay to replace a starter that they didn't "****". Their are millions of Tauri on the road with gallons of oil running over there starters and they continue to work. A ton of GM cars have oil filters over the starters also.

Is it good for the starter? No. But, is it soley responsible for the starter dying? No.

If you change the filter, the starter gets dumped on.This is a fact. This is a good thing.(changing the filter) It does no harm except to ones vanity. I'd rather have the inside of the engine clean. All starters go out at some point. This is not caused of the oil being dumped on it. One can change the oil neatly from the pan...but not from the filter.

I call changing the oil in the SHO the "Starter external lubrication procedure" :)

Just wipe it down best you can.

After my car going through 4 starters here's good advice... don't even bother with remanufactured starters. Order a NEW starter from Beck Arnley. Rock auto has them for under $140 and there's no core charge.

Keeping the oil off the starter is quite easy, just take a washer fluid jug and cut out one side of it leaving it shaped like a U with just 1" sides or so with a little hole cut at the bottom. Stuff it in there once you got the filter a bit loose, but not enough to start leaking. Once you have the protector in there unscrew the filter by the end. This will catch all the oil from hitting the starter. Some people use plastic sheet and just cover it as well.
