I know there are differences in the trannys, but I have a really low mile rebuilt tranny I'd like to put in the 96 I'm working on. If I had a 98 PCM, would that solve the compatibility problem without changing out too much?

TIA

I dont think so; I beleive the difference is either the valve body or the solenoids, but it can be made to work.

I think you just need to change the TCC solenoid. Changing the PCM would require the wire harness and a couple of sensors too.

I have a 98 engine also that's going in, and I can either move the wiring harness and sensors from the 96 to the 98, or keep everything the same. Basically, I can do it either way, but I'd just as soon use the 98 stuff. There seem to be a couple of plugs that are different on the wiring harness, but it seems I can change them to match.

I suggest putting the 96 wiring on the 98 engine and going that route. Then, pull the side cover off the trans and put a new pressure control solenoid and new 96 tcc solenoid on, and you should be good to go. According to what I've read, the tcc solenoid is the only one that is different - and that is matched by what RockAuto shows.

You need to change out to the TCC solenoid with the white connector to use the 98 tranny in the 96.

To put a 98 motor into a 96 you have to use the 96 engine harness. Unless you feel like a wiring rats nest.
