98 SHO with 32K miles won't take fuel

My '98 Gen III will not take a more than 1/2 tank of fuel and it resists that much. Anyone know what might be causing this? The car only has 32K original miles on it with no other problems what so ever. The only mod I've done is installed aftermarket mufflers and tips.

Your hose that connects the tank to the fuel filler opening has a kink in it or the vent tube right next to it. Jack it up and look from underneath you will see.

Thanks, I'll do that this evening after the wife brings it home. Wonder what caused it to do that??

Well it could be the smaller vent hose is somehow internally blocked too.

Is it possible your sending unit is faulty? Are you considering the amount of fuel you put in it as opposed to the capacity in the owners manual? Also have you had your cam sprockets repaired yet? Reason I ask is there has been a class action suit filed against Ford for this problem and you may, or may not be aware of it. It's always a pleasure to make yet another Canadian Friend! Thanks for the suggestion on checking the sending unit...I'll pay more attention to that over the next couple of fuel stops.

Thanks for bringing the cam problem to my attention. I've been seeing the occasional comments about this issue but I'm not sure what I would need to do about it right now. Other than keeping my ear to the ground for new information is there anything you would suggest that I do such as get on some kind of registry?

I would suggest getting it handled pronto. It's a heck of allot cheaper to fix it now, then to buy a new engine.

I've been seeing the occasional comments about this issue but I'm not sure what I would need to do about it right now.

There are cams failing at the rate of 2-3 a week that are getting reported. If the cams go it won't make any difference how much gas you can get in the tank. The first thing you should be doing is addressing the problem. $500 is cheap insurance and a one time fix.

I don't mean to go off on another tangent here, but, I was SHOwn a cam out of a
4.6 that was a hollow tube with pressed on lobes and gears (that failed). The mechanic / engine
builder said that some of the 4.6 cams are failing also, but since the engine isn't zero
clearance, it doesn't do the damage that the SHO V-8's get. Has anyone else heard
this?

The feeling is mutual. As far as a registry I'm not sure but I had heard of a petition in the past. I would suggest taking the time and reading some these many V8 SHO owner cam failure links at the bottom half of the page. The number of them alone is quite disturbing, and if I owned one I would definitely consider having this cam weld procedure done.

Do you guys know how torqued off I am at the prospects of having to do a $500 preventative maint. procedure on a babied car with 32K ??

I can't believe it. I thought I bought the greatest car ever and this is such a freakin slap in the face from FORD! I've been a loyal Ford buyer since I got my first Mustang back in High School and if this V8 SHO drops a cam and Ford doesn't pay for it I'm going import all the way....forget GM.

Sorry guys I'm venting but I overmaintain my cars because that's just the way I am but lets face it... I shouldn't have to even think about doing any kind of open heart sergery on pampered car until 100K+. I'm so disguested I might sell the stupid thing before I sink any money into it!
