I very aware of this problem and i'm sure almost everyone who has a sho, or any ford with the DIS type ignition system. its you CPS, SHOshop claims that the waterpump contributes to the problem most of the time. when the waterpump fails its weeps water and that water drips right on top of the CPS (crank position sensor), causing it to short. mine failed twice however and both were due to wear. but either way it fails by keeping your car from starting for a bit, another sypmton is your tach, keep an eye on it while your driving, if it jumps around like crazy every so often then thats jsut further proof. No i'm not going to lie and say its an easy fix, but i did mine both times and it requires just about a whole day to do, and if you have to replace the water pump, it will also cost couple hundered dollars, the CPS sensor, will run you about 100 bucks or less, you will need a new timing belt, 75 bucks, and if you need a new water pump a rebuilt one will run 150 bucks, and 250 for a new one, and if you get someone else to do it it will run even more counting the labor. small problem but big time pain in the butt.

one word....

STARTER!

Exact same thing happened to me....when the started gets hot, from the engine running, it wont turn over....but when it cools down, its fine....just get under the car, and hit it with something hard next time it doesnt start. If it is the starter (and im sure it is) it should begin to turn over, and start the car while hitting it with something hard. (of course it'll take 2 people to do that, one hitting the starter...and one turning the ignition key)

I wanna comment on a few hings he said, he is correct to a point, but another clue to help determine if its your Crank sensor is, somtimes the car will stall while its running (due to overheating of the sensor)...it will just cut out and die. Thats obiviously not the case if it was the starter (so that should help determine a little too). Also, if your tach is jumping around, then Im sure that would not be caused from your Crank sensor, but from your Camshaft sensor(both the SHO's have)....just tying to help

It could be the starter and if you wanted to start there it would be the least expensive way, just remove the started take to autozone or were ever and get them to check it, cost you nothing but time, and start it easy if not frustrating to remove, you could have it out tested and back in the car in less than hour and half. and if thats the problem then buy a new started and thats that, but don't believe its your problem, but i do think for cost sake you should at least check into it.

I'll start with the starter. Is there anywere I could find some good documentation for (preferably for dummies) on how to replace the crank sensor?

Cam sensors rare ley fail, i have about 300k miles worth of SHOs and have never experience that problem, and when my tach jumps that tells me its time to change the CPS.
