Okay, all you smart guys. My son has one of my 93ATX SHOs at school. He probably beats it, but dig this story. In casual driving, it was shifting up and down, missing shifts and bucking terribly so he thought the tranny was shot. Aamco tranny people read CE codes; read me 9 errors (L & R banks both lean & rich, hi exh press, EGR sig hi, injector pulsewidth hi, fuel pump sig open to ECM & EGO not switching). So, bring to Ford dealer: "Only 1 error: needs wires and new plugs". ($1160 quote, not kidding - I said FORGET IT!!!) So, I just ordered new plugs, wires, and two O2 sensors. However, WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON?

The symptoms seem like cam or crank sensor as a first guess. The engine codes however don't exactly point there. Most of the codes are probably due to a malfunction that threw everything off. The fuel and exhaust codes, I would think, indicate that the problem is not tranny related. I guess the first thing to do is to check for oil leaking into the spark plug wells before you just put new ones in there. The new plugs, wires, and O2s are a good first start. You can save a few bucks by buying the 3.0 wires(cheaper) and having a snugger fit. See what happens after that. Was that a $1160 for plugs and wires?

The high exhaust and EGR pressure may be due to clogged exhaust. I would clear the codes at start fresh. Oil in the plug wells won't throw any codes, but it can cause a misfire. Ths CPS won't cause the enigne to buck, but it will shut it off clean. It could be an intermittant ground that is confusing the heck out of the EEC. Need more input.

Thanks luigisho and sdpatt . Yes, the $1160 was for wires $225, plugs $60, the balance labor, Park City Ford, Bridgeport, CT. "Lots of labor to R&R the manifolds for access to the firewall side." How many cats do these things have? Who sells them aftermarket? Is it possible to unclog if clogged? I see millions of engine mount replacements here, but very little about cats. Do they go for 200kmi? (My SHOs have ~100k each) More input when (if) my son drives it home from CT on Tuesday. Hope she doesn't blow up! Hey, also, Mr. Torrie McPhail at [email protected] is a sweetheart for parts! Thanks again!
