My 93 SHO is making a "flutter" noise in the passenger side...sounds like upper portion of the engine.

It only makes during idle and after you rev engine and rpm's are coming back down. Can't seem to hear it at all during the rev. I would think if it were a bearing it would make the noise at all rpm's????

Does this sound serious? Any suggestions of what it might be?

i would think as well a bearing would make constant noise. it sounds like it may be your valves and you possibly might not be hearing it during the rev since its not loud enough to overcome the other engine and exhaust noise. do you know if the owner ever had the 60k done on that '89?

That's kind of what I was thinking...if it were a bearing it would be contstant and maybe even louder at higher RPM. I'm not sure if the previous owner ever did the 60K. The motor seems smooth and there is absolutely no smoke out the exhaust.

It's funny...the noise almost sounds like it's coming from underneath the timing cover. I just haven't had a chance to take it off yet and run the engine like that.

MikeM,
Check your timing belt tensioner... if it goes out your timing belt flap against the timing cover.
If you can press the pivot idler down by hand it is likely the tensioner needs replaced.
