Just FYI:

I just replaced my front door mounted JBL speakers with Sony Xplod XS-R1641 rated at 220W peak 45W rms. Got them from Walmart for $50.

I only had to elongate one of the mounting holes with a rat-tail file (being careful not to get filings near magnet etc.) since 2 of the holes lined up with a little experimentation. I then took the old JBL speaker mounted grill off and cut out the cross pieces and tweeter leaving just a ring with the foam still mounted. Then the inside portion of the resulting ring was beveled with a half-round coarse file to clear the Sony speaker suspension and the small **** were filed off making the portion of the ring that is in contact with the edge of the new speaker flat. This results in the finished installation having the foam ring protude about 1/8" more from the door but when the door trim panel is installed the foam gives enough to make up for this difference.

Bottom line.........not too bad a job and they actually sound better than the stock speakers. Bass is about the same but the highs are a bit cleaner and crisper. The work is in cutting and beveling the old grills to make rings, but once that is done any future replacements that might become necessary should be a piece of cake.
