Car is a 93 atx, trans is a 93 with 80,460 miles on it, we just put it in and one of the lines to the cooler is stripped and leaking so we need to fix that. But the car only goes in drive, but when put in reverse it acts as if it is in neutral. Why might this be? Could the leak cause a big enough pressure drop to cause reverse to not work? I need to get this fixed ASAP so any help you can give would be awesome.

TIA

Its just one trans cooler line wont seal to the trans since the inside of the trans is stripped so it pours a descent stream out of the bottom cooler line (but not gushing out) , I'm going to try and fix it Tm then let it run and add fluid and see if that makes any difference if not then I start loosing hope still any ideas?

Trans is bad.

The filter inside it was clean, it goes in drive just fine and moves the car. Why do you say it is bad? What actually fails in the trans to make reverse not work but everything else fine?

Could it be a shift servo or something?

Reasons why the SHO atx may not engage reverse as per ford service manual:

I am only going to list some of the the ones I know are possible for us in this current situation that would be fairly easy to check since there are so many.

1) Improper fluid level
2) Half shafts can be worn, damaged or missassembled (probably not but I figured id list it)
3) Shift linkage improperly adjusted or damaged (verify MLP sensor is properly adjusted)
4) Low reverse line pressure (oh gee, maybe that leak we have has something to do with this, lets pray haha)
5) Tons of troubleshooting guides for other damaged trans parts or loose bolts internally.

So no, just because reverse doesn't work, does not mean the trans is bad.

I don't know much about the internals of a trans. but if it goes in every gear but reverse it sounds bad.

Could that little vacuum canister on the back of the trans make this happen, the thign thats the size of a hockey puck? The thing with the 3 10mm bolts, I know it has fixed some trannys in the past because when they crack they screw everything up.

Oh come on just Flintstone it until it fails and then build it up!

yeah, although that is possible, it will get old really fast. I talked to someone today and they actually explained to me how the trans works and what exactly can fail. So I know what to test now to know if it is actually bad and parts to replace to repair it.

Something is loose or busted internally.

The only thing that you can check/repair without pulling the whole thing and tearing it down is to drop the pan and check to see if the reverse clutch apply fluid tube is loose.

TSB 94-20-4 can serve as a guide.

On a side note here, low gear aka 1 on the shifter, also acts as if it is in neutral. So I think I'm probably SOL because that runs the same clutches as reverse, but will run a different path to get there.
