Hello guys,

I've been curious about upgrades I can install for my ATX. I truly wanted an MTX but SHO's are rare in my area to begin with so I had to compromise for now.

I know stuff like a tranny cooler and shift kit are good starting grounds but I don't even know where to look for these parts so a nice shove in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

:thankyou:

Step one would be to get a 94-95 EEC-IV computer and substitute it for the 93. Much improved shift quality and durability IIRC.

shift kit on this trans requires a complete disassembly. if you do that, have it rebuilt to 94/95 specs so it will last.

the factory trans cooler on these cars is perfectly adequate unless you have boosted the engine.

the D4U1 pcm is a definite improvement, as was stated above.

3.98 gears FTW!!!! There great. If your going to do an overhaul and shift kit you should get the gearset. Make sure if you get it rebuilt that they replace the existing forward clutch piston with a steel piston, not aluminum. Do a higher stall torque converter too. There are a number of things to do, personally spend the cash and get it done right once.

Thanks guys,

Alright so the 94-95 ATX EEC-IV will be the first step.

Looks like my best option will be to work the trans rebuild into my next 60k (half way there) along with a couple of other smaller things I wanted to do while I pull the engine.

So, my list includes:

-94-95 EEC - can be found relatively easily
Trans Rebuild to 94-95 specs
- shift kit - any recommendations?
- replace aluminum forward clutch piston with steel piston - ask the shop to order one?
- torque converter - is this item really worth the $500? I'm trying to keep the purse relatively low
- 3.98 gears - what are my other options with final drive gears?

You should come to our meet this weekend and talk to Terry Phibbs. He recently rebuilt the Tranny in his car and did some pretty cool things with it.

you should not need to spend $500 on a torque converter. my trans shop only charges $100 for a tc if you get it along with the rebuild.

The same thought went through my mind too.

I've heard about the HD gearset, gonna dig further into the available info and get the low down.

The real questions I have towards this tranny upgrade are:
A) worth it?
-I wanted an MTX as I've said but if I can rebuild this trans to get it to perform on the same level as an MTX? AKA (not loosing ground after 2nd gear)

B) How much would it be able to handle?
- I've saved this SHO from the junkyard as I see it and have already become quite found despite only having driven her less than 500 miles and still having a couple issues to address BUT if I can I would love to make this car a mildly boosted daily driver so that my SHO (stills debating a name for her) sees some glory after being so neglected.

once again guys, I deeply appreciate the help and responses. I am starving for knowledge and this is the place to come.

First, purchase the ASTG rebuild manual for the AX4S. You can purchase all your rebuild parts through bulkpart.com. Go with the Superior shift correction kit, KAXOD-E. Also, install the Superior **** dam kit - it gives more **** to the front planets.

I have a list of all the tips, tricks, and updates, but its too long to post here. PM me your email and I'll send it to you. Here's a thread from a couple years ago............... AX4S Rebuild Thread. Good luck

My turbo ATX was faster in the 1/4 mile than just about everybody on here because it could actually put the power to the ground. It was a BLAST to drive. The HD gear set is for manual transmissions not automatics.

The MTX will handle more power But a properly built ATX will take quite a bit of boost for a while. My FPS transmission saw between 10-14psi depending on my mood and the car was nasty fast but after 10K miles 3rd gear melted to a pile of gooy nastiness. On that transmissions hard part (gears and such) failure was not a problem but keeping the trans temp at a reasonable level is impossible without a external pump to circulate oil through a cooler which is probably why I killed so many transmissions.

I really believe a stock healthy transmission will take 6-8psi all day without issue as long at you keep your transmission temp in check. i'm going to say that again and again

keep your transmission temp in check!
keep your transmission temp in check!
keep your transmission temp in check!
keep your transmission temp in check!

I wise man once told me not to run more than 8psi on a automatic if you are going to drive the snot out of it. 6 transmissions later I can say that he was right. If you don't believe that my transmissions were rebuilt right pm whiteguy93. He bought my turbo car and swapped the built trans and converter into his NA car and said it shifts awesome. When you double the torque the engine makes the shifts are considerably slower. for me 3rd gear clutches always seem to be troublesome so if you are going to run big boost try to let up on the gas a bit for the 2 to 3 shift, and keep your transmission temp in check!
