My 93 ATX is shifting hard, (real hard) once in a while when making the 1-2 shift. It has 160K on it, I have been driving it this way for a couple of years just babying it along. I have gotten to the point where I let off the gas when the shift happens. But sometimes it shifts just perfect, what is the deal? I should not even ask but is there a solution other than rebuilding it? If not who is affordable but good when rebuilding?

When accelerating from rest with authority and then lifting off the gas just before the 1-2 shift will cause the shift to be very harsh. The ATX controller has, based on your acceleration, decided that the shift needs to firm and so increases the transmission line pressure. When you lift off the gas the ATX controller will try to reduce the line pressure but the pressure cannot be instantly lowered. The result is a harsh shift. This is normal behaviour for the ATX Taurus.

I realize that if you get in the gas hard and let off befor a shift it may shift hard because it thought you were going to stay on the gas. I am talking about a problem where the car shifts hard from 1 to 2 most of the time, (but not always) no matter how soft and easy you accelerate. Sometimes there is a shudder feel with shifting. Any ideas other than rebuild time??? cry

Wow, 160k miles, thats alot of miles is it original tranny? I would recommend doing a fluid change with some good fluid such as Valvoline MaxLife and add in a good additive. This should clean up the shifting if it hasn't been changed in a while. Other than that theres not much you, the home mechanic, can do with the ATX. My recommendation would be to do as I said and milk that tranny for as long as you can.
