92 tranny work in 97

ok so i have two regular taurus gls. one is a 92 with the vulcan and AXOD-E. the other is a 97 with the vulcan and AX4S. my 97's tranny pretty much went out, all is left is 1st gear. my uncle had the tranny in the 92 rebuilt about a year ago but the car has suspension problems and way too many miles on the engine. the 97 has only 75k miles. so we are junkin out the 92 very soon because its just been sittin useless.

i have read up that the AX4S is basically the same tranny as the AXOD-E
what i need to know is, can i pull out the AX4S out of the 92 and put it in the 97

also if anyone needs any parts from the 92 give me a PM, if not its goin to the yard. overall the car is in good condition

The transmission is inferior to the Gen3 one. There might be some wiring issues as the 92 is OBD-I and the 97 is OBD-II. Might want to ask on TCCA to be sure.

++ I had an AXOD at one point. They were, and still are, quite failure prone, and they leak a lot too, which causes shifting issues and failure. If it were possible I'd take an AX4N or AX4S from a junk yard before futzing with a AXOD in a later vehicle.

yeah i kno the gen2 tranny is not as good as the gen3 but i dont have $1200+ for a 97 rebuild. i have a AXOD-E freshly rebuilt

You can try whatever you like, but I'd look for something with body damage in a JY.
