4.6 DOHC in a SHO?

Would it work? Putting a Lincoln Continetal 4.6 in a SHO? Or something even wilder, a 2003 Cobra motor with a Lincoln tranny! WOW!! 390 horse SHO!

Might be a tough fit. The 4.6 DOHC is a big motor, even when compared to a 302:

The only problem might be the DOHC heads. The 2V 1999+ heads are cheaper, and still quite good.

You mean install a SOHC GT motor in SHO? But what tranny would you put behind it? The dohc has a front wheel tranny already.

That is something you can do with a regular taurus. If you ever did that with a Gen III SHO I would have to seriously hurt you.

I think the basic bellhousing bolt pattern will work on any 4.6 block.

(That is something you can do with a regular taurus. If you ever did that with a Gen III SHO I would have to seriously hurt you.)

Actually, the way the Gen 3 motor grenades and the way the Gen 3 values are going to be bad forever due to the bad publicity heaped on these cars, it makes sense to me to do a Gen 3. If I had to pick which SHO type would be the next to have another car blow up I would have to cast my vote for a Gen 3 camfailure or ATX going bad. With a car sitting in the driveway with a broken valve sticking into the cylinder bore this engine swap suddenly looks cost effective.
I don't know about the 4.6 FITTING. This motor is BIG.

The 2V valves should be smaller, and easier to cram into a SHO, as well.

Also, wouldn't it be possible to fit a 5.4 in place of the 4.6? As far as I know, the 5.4 is a stroked 4.6.

Sorry about that, Awkward wording. My engine is fine. I was speaking from a speculative position. If I was the poor bastard with a blown motor in the driveway, looking in the boneyard for a replacement engine, a fwd continental drivetrain would definitely raise my eyebrows.

Funny you should mention blown. Thats my current project. I'm getting together the parts to design my own supercharger install for my SHO. I'm looking for a good used Vortech "S" trim head, reverse rotation (like a 96 - 02 cobra uses) with a straight discharge. Anybody got one laying around?

So what you guys are saying is that it can be done? That is a good alternative for you guys with ESP woes. I am sure the cost of a wreaked Lincoln Conty drive train is way less than a new SHO power plant.

I think its just a little more than a tranny and engine. Better take the WHOLE Lincoln. EVEN IF you can squeeze that setup in there, is there enough ****** and Jack Daniels in your medicine chest for the rest of the project?

Now, I don't wanna open a can of worms here... but someone (wink wink) says that there are a few regular Gen III Taurus floating around with the SOHC 4.6 in them. Until, ahem... someone... gets some evidence of this, I'll liken it to that of a unicorn.

Well it maybe a major headach, but it would be cool to have 4.6 SHO. Maybe Ford should have done this instead of using the 3.4?

i was thinking about this myself lately. i highly doubt it would fit without majorly redesigning the engine bay. that engine is massive. here are some more pics. this is from one in a ranger.



i jut went out and measured the sho. i came up with about 24 inches across and only about 26.5 in the whole area of the engine bay. sooooo that would be one **** of a shoe horn!

I always thought that the Continental was based on the Taurus platform. If so, why can't a 4.6l fit?

They may or may not sit on a similar platform (I don't know for sure) but if you pull a Tortise along side a Continental you will notice that the Lincoln has a larger doghouse for the drivetrain to drop into.

Not trying to start a flame war or nothing, but looking at that pic of the little 5.0 next to the massive 4.6, why not just make an adapter plate and stuff the small block in the 3.4's place? Sure the SHO is a much more sophisticated and mature vehicle than an old 5.0 but it would be a nice torque bump with a lot of go-fast parts available. Besides, My last car was a 5.0 and that thing ran as smooth as glass and was perfectly reliable and powerful, even with the 140K she had on her.

No more "yamaha inside", but at least there would be "low end torque" inside. Of all the thing I miss about my 5.0 it was the tree pulling grunt that I miss the most!

If Ford could have fit a 90 degree V8 in the car they would have put one in. No reason to go to the expense of a 60 degree V8 if the 90 would fit.
