Well, I think I took out reverse yesterday when I missed 4th and tried to go into reverse at 65 mph eek! ...alot of grinding in the process... I actually didn't get into reverse but ground it severely trying to get into 4th, twice...(quick shifts are usually no problem, except for yesterday!).
What are some things I can look for that might cause it not to have a reverse gear (or not quite engage in reverse)? places on linkage that might be bent/broken or any other things to look for before I have to pull the tranny and rebuild the syncro's or replace the gear? Anyone had this problem before?
I realize the error is Mine.
We live, We Learn!!
Thanks for any advice or info in advance!

It shouldn't have gone in at 65. You may have heard some grinding noise, but it shouldn't have gone in. I guess if you really jammed it in, you probably messed up the synchro. In that case, you'll have trouble getting it to go into reverse. Try putting it in first gear first, then put it in reverse. How does that work?

DougLee25- Thanks for your reply.
After further diagnosis, I found that if I run engine and put it in reverse for nuetrel without the clutch, all I get is a lil click/clunk sound and a very slight rattle/wine(?) sound ...no grind at all...just the sound of the gear engaging. First to reverse with clutch does the same.... think she's toast!
I have to spend all taxes and other funds to get my house back out of forclosure so, I'll be on the scooter bike for a while til I can pull tranny #3 for a swap-out.
(BTW, I bought tranny #2 (jammed 5th/reverse) in fixer car and was planning to use #3 in that one...uuuugh... some days are worse than others, huh?
Thank again,

There is no synchronizer on reverse gear. If you are having trouble getting the shifter into reverse, make sure the clutch is fully releasing. Try the simple belt slack take-up method of pulling up ******* the clutch pedal.

The SHO transaxle does not like being rushed into any gear. Especially reverse. Your synchros can only take so much "quick shifting" before they are worn out. Do yourself and your possibly rebuilt transmission a favor and stop trying to act like Mario Andretti driving a Taurus.

Duh!! There is no synchro on reverse gear. What was I thinking? Do you think he actually stripped out the gear itself?

When Josh T rebuilt my MTX, he replaced the "reverse idler gear"(whatever that is) because he said it was shot. Probably from the previous owners constantly grinding it into reverse. Maybe you damaged the reverse idler gear when you missed that shift.

There's only one problem though, the idler gear is obsolete and you'll have a tough time finding a new replacement.

Thanks to all for your replies.
True to life there Scott... I've been too rough on the tranny... Just something about that acceration factor I do like a lil too much. Time to pay the piper, huh?
Guess it's time to fix the Red '90 (Bad trans too) as I still have the 70k motor and trans sitting out in the parts car... I'll have to go buy an engine hoist today and get to work...brrr..cold and wet, doesn't sound like much fun.
Can anyone tell me exactly what else I need to disconnect to drop the entire engine/trans on the subframe??? ... wire harness, top strut bolts, brakelines, anti-lock sensor, steering shaft, torque limiters, exhaust and lines and hoses. Have I overlooked any major items?
Thanks again for the info,
Tomuza

edit:
Think I can drive it to work like this for a week or two without fear of the trans locking up 60 mph on the hwy?
