I was driving to work a few weeks ago and the transmission would not shift from 4th to 5th gear. RPM's just ran up and could tell there was a issue. I ended up limping it back to a nearby friends house and had a few other issues arise within the short drive.

Such as the car free revved in first gear until there was a very noticeable "thunk" and then started going. Felt like something finally 'caught'. Another odd is the RPM's acting odd during all this, the video attached gives a better explanation.

After bringing the car back and looking underneath, there was a very noticeable leak coming from the passenger side rear differential seal. Replaced it and filled up the rear diff fluid. No leaks in the front i could se, still went ahead and ended up flushing the transmission and PTU which didn't help after another test drive, which this video is from.

Putting the car in manual seems to confuse the car more, sometimes it wont go into manual/sports mode at all with shifts not controlled, from the video you when shifted to 5th, the car couldnt catch gear and free revved.

Thoughts?

Apparently video is too large! Is it okay here to post a link to a reddit site containing the video?

Does your car have reverse?
Reverse works. Car will seem to act normal just starting up/moving around the house. However, even the day the car started acting up, the issues seem slightly sporadic. After limping home that morning and circling around the block 'symptom checking' i had come to a stop sign and the car would free rev and not go into gear at a standstill(as it did in the video after manually entering 5th). Revved it a little more and it almost 'thudded' into gear and jumped forward.

your thinking wave plate also?
When my transmission quit, I had 1st and 2nd gear, then it would hang 3rd gear, and shift into fourth. Nothing past that and no reverse. Then on the way to the shop, my car shuddered and I had 3rd gear and reverse again. It didnt last long however. My failure was the snag ring broke in the 3-5-R drum. It pretty much *****'D by transmission. I ended up just get it replaced.

yup that’s about where I’m at. I damaged the rear wheel sensor replacing my axle, so once that’s in and those lights are off I’m gonna do a quick scan and get ready to order a new/used transmission.
Just out of curiosity usity, what are typical signs of PTU failure?

Usually if you smell a propane smell that means your PTU is toast. Heat is what kills them, and it located directly above a downpipe.

Here is a very good explanation by a member on here named Mr.HighCaliber.

"PTU's don't fail at least not from a power handling perspective. These only fail from lack of maintenance. Spun bearings and galling of the gears from lack of lubrication.

High Heat dries up the lighter oil molecules in the ****, which causes more heat due to lack of lubrication (thermal runaway) which leads to the remaining gear oil turning to thick black paste which clogs up the vent tube in the ptu which cause pressure buildup in the ptu which forces the remaining, non-congealed fluid out past the shaft seals. Now the only left is a thick paste thats easily flung off of the gears, sticking only to the case. After this chain of events, the bearings run dry and begin to fail, next are the gears. Tolerances widen or things begin to sieze. Bearing and gear noise are usually the first signs of mechanical failure.

But the PTU internals are stout. The weakest part of our powertrain is the RDU Atc coupler. (The electronic coupler in the rear differential). At least in terms of tq capacity and power handling."

Its good you flushed the ptu. 2015 had the old bearing. Ford updated the bearing in Late 2016. We still have the old bearing on stock shelfs. I dont know why. Contracts are like tight ropes

Update
Hooking a scanner to the car and a solenoid in the trans was bad.
Ended up replacing the trans with a used one and drove it for a week with no issues.....
Now i have a shudder under acceleration. Car shifts without issue, wondering if its the RDU which ive heard can cause shudder? Or the TC.
If you've read the thread so far, you'll see i did have a rear seal blow out. But i also just installed a new/used trans/converter.
Any opinions??? Not sure if the RDU is a common issue, or if there's a way to tell. Shudder feels like its been getting slightly worse, most likely not driving the car to work until i get this sorted.
Oh... and the right turbo oil feed has a leak.
Pretty wild i went all this time without a single issue, I tell yah when it rains its pours!
