2010 Taurus SHO Broken Piston, Engine Failure

While I'd love to know who tuned this guys car. I have a feeling he won't say.

I already pm'd him and crickets..... BUT.... whoever did can always say he was running a tune they recommended against running...

When Torrie was tuning mine there were some really funky tunes he sent me that if I decided to run them would surely have had negative consequences....especially this time of year when the fuel systems get taxed due to cold...

Who is to say his tuner was working with him and the cars owners decided to stick with a tune that was not good but he liked how the car felt?

Lots of unknowns and lots a room for a tuner to play the deniability game...

Best he just take it up with his tuner and get a new motor...

That's what I was wondering. Is blowing holes in the side of the F150 blocks a product of something in the engine or the tuners. Sounds like it's the tuners.

*EDIT* Getting back to the OP, I do agree with the end of what BPD said. I doubt Ford will do anything to help with the engine and I wouldn't expect them to do anything (even if it was in warranty). Once the engine is tuned, you essentially void the warranty or any Ford help in a case of catastrophic failure like shown. It's a risk that pretty much everyone takes when tuning their cars.

This is correct. My main point was that it was/is tuned, per the OP in another community, and that ultimately, Ford shouldn't be held liable in any way, shape,.or form.

Before you bash someone you should probable check his credibility BPD does have one of the fastest SHO's out there and when it comes to think out side the box the SHO community is a monkey see monkey do kinda planet!! Up till the end of last year people didnt really start trying new things and those that did I give you all the respect you deserve. This Year will be fun I plan on putting a few of the top tunners to work at the track and see who comes out on top. Also everyone dont have money to just throw away so pricing will be compared as well.

I'd like to see pictures with the heads off and know if the top of the piston is stuck in the cylinder or shows signs of pitting. The wrist pin is clearly in the bottom of the pan. Pre ignition/detonation, contact with valves, and water ingestion destroy pistons typically. The hole is the block is most likely an after effect of the rod spinning around with no piston attached.

Good find, a lot of the F150 forums I was reading had the majority of drivers that had blown their motor were also tuned.

Apparently that's may not be the case..

Although similar in nature, the F150 motors are NOT the same motors as used in the SHO's.

Main difference being internals.

Each platform faces their own challenges respectively. F150's mainly with their ingestion issues.

Drawing correlations between them, for sake of the OP's question, really isn't applicable.

Don't forget LSPI, which is another assumed cause.

Oddly enough, very little actual diagnosis is done on any of these engines because Ford is saying nothing when it gets the engines back. All we can do is look at the failures and correlate. You feel comfortable saying that because the internals are "different" that there is no way there could be interrelated problems in the same engine platform? I wish I was that confident.

Yes, Mike(BPD) is very confident in saying that. He has had access to people at FMC, that most don't that would be in the know, and other knowledge people.

When the 2014 SHO Convention was held in Chicago, we toured the Chicago plant and talked with FMC Powertrain personal. Yes the F150 and SHO motor are in the 3.5 family that's it. Couple easy difference are, F150 3.5 has dual cam phasers, HPFP is near rear of the head, plastic intake, bigger turbos.

Could just be plain part failure, it happens, sucks, but does.
