I just bought a 93 ATX with 155xxx km, I'm going to attempt the timing belt this weekend. I bought the belt and tensioner and have access to the Ford tool for the tensioner. My question is how the tool works. Is it a holding tool so you can pre load the tensioner against the belt? There is a bolt to adjust on the tool, not sure what its for. Thanks Gary

Gary, that is only half of the factory tool. It goes on using the power steering pump support bracket, and the little 'arm' is to keep the plunger in the tensioner from compressing as you do step 2.

Step 2 is to put the little bracket thingy into the 2 small holes in the face of the timing belt idler pulley, and put a torque wrench on that and torque it to 4.3 lb-in.

Then tighten the bolt that holds the idler pulley in place and remove the tool.

I've changed my ATX timing belt several times and never used a fancy tool....it shouldn't need to be that complicated.

Its not, and I've never used the tool either. The tool is designed to put the right amount of spring load on the idler pulley. You can do it by hand too, if you have a feel for belt tensions.
