Will a 17x8 rim fit my 1995 SHO with a 235/50-17 tire? What is the perfect offset of the rim for it not to rub on the fenders?

Did any of you encounter any problems after installing bigger size rims and tires?

Any input is greatly appreciated. :p

The 235/50-17 tires are too tall. They will rub the bottom of the spring preches on both the front and rear struts.

You will need a 40mm offset with either 225/50-17 or 235/45-17 tires on a 8.0" wide rim and something like a 42mm offset (or 40mm offset with 2-3mm thick wheel spacers on the rear) with 245/45-17 tires on a 8.0" rim to clear the strut tubes. None of these combo's should require trimming the rear fender lips.

I have 18x8 with 40mm offset 235/40/18 tires and with no rubbing at all(front and rear), even with my somewhat  lower stance :D .

What would be the perfect combination from the last message you had posted?
Is it the 17x8 rim with the 235/45-17 tire with a 40 mm offset?
Is it the 17x8 rim with the 235/45-17 tire with a 42 mm offset? or
the 17x8 rim with the 35/50-17 tire with 2-3 mm spacers on a 40 or 42 mm offset rim>>>

What is the best? What size rim and tire did you put on your car?

note: my car has Eibachs spings and tokico struts>

RI-SHO...your car looks great with the 18" rims! However, I might just stay with 17" rims fearing that I might rub fenders and what not... I guess as long as I get a rim with a 40mm offset, there should be no problems at all.

Did you have to use spacers? I sort of dislike the idea of using spacers on the wheel.

Guys, it doesn't matter what the wheel diameter is as long as you have the appropriate tire. You can have a 20" wheel as long as the width is 8" or less and the offset is 40mm. 17" or 18" if the width is the same, if the offset is the same, there is no diff. As for your question, I've had 17"x7.5" wheels and a 38mm offset, and 17"x8" with 40mm offset. Both of these wheels had 235/45 Z17 tires. That is the size tire you want for good contact patch and no fender rubbing.

It doesnt matter that your getting 17's, because your going with a 45series tire, so with 18's you do what I did and go down to 40series(less sidewall), which gives you almost the same wheel diameter of 235/45/17 which is usally about 25.4"(and also the same diameter as my 235/40/18). And I said they fit with no problems so I needed nothing, not even a camber kit for the rear, alignment is all within spec etc. And with your stiffer than stock Eibach springs you shouldnt worry about any rubbing, my SS springs are stiffer but also lower, both way you wont rub!!

I do have some pictures but haven't got them online yet. I'll have to figure out how to do it. BTW, I don't have the 17s anymore. I sold my MOMOs because they were a little too heavy. I'll eventually get some Centerline RPM or some other forged wheel. Right now I only have 16"x7.5" wheels with BFGoodrich R1 autocross tires. It won't ever see snow again.

John,

That should be "something like a 38mm offset with 245/45" below, not 42mm.

Thanks for catching the error Dave.

235/45-17 tire on a 8.0" wide rim with 40mm offset

245/45-17 tire on a 8.0" wide rim will need either a 38mm offset or a 40mm offset with a 2-3mm thick spacer.

If you stay with a 7.5" wide rim with a 40mm offset there is less of a chance of a rubbing problem. That's because the same tire mounted on a 7.5" rims will have a 0.2" less of a cross sectional width than if it were mounted on a 8.0" wide rim, that's 0.1" less (or 2.5mm less) per side.

Ummm...if you have 245mm tires then the extra 1/2" in rim width wont be a problem with a tire already 9.3" wide, if the offset is the same. What is the offset for your 17x7.5? Because my 18x8 with 40mm offset fit just fine with more room to spare(defitnaly more than a finger in the rear).

Hey all...

I just barely put new tires on my car. I went with Kumho Ecsta Supra 712s, Y speed rated 235/45/ZR17s. Great looking tire, no fitment issues :D

Go with these, they are big/bad/and wide... Also keeps fender gap to a minimum... Why did they make these fenders so big anyway?

I have Mille Miglia 17X8's on mine w/ 235/45/17, just put on new Bridgestone potenza re730's.... Very nice tires, and grip like a ba$tard! No rubbing whatsoever, and I think the offset is 40mm..... NO spacers nothing, just mount and drive.... Good Luck!

Thanks for all of your input. Every post here was great and very helpful. I will definitely go with the 17x8 with a 40mm offset.

Tony,

I plan to get the AT Italia 7200 (17x8). The ten spoke design I think is great looking on the car. How about you, what style are you planning to get?

By the way, what part of PA. are you from?

this is what I was told to look for:

5 x 108 bolt pattern
63 mm pilot
38-40 mm offset
17 x 7; 17 x 7.5

On my 93, I run 17 x 7.5 and 235/45/17

I got confirmation back from Volk and Racing Hart (5 x 114; 5 x 100) that none of their rims come in the size we need for our cars. I have put a call to Japan, and have been told that there may be some Japan only rims that will fit the above dimensions. They are not really "offered" for general public sale, however I was told that they may be available. In the mean time they offered to take a 5 x 114 rim and drill and insert a steel insert to a 5 x 108. They say they have done this before. I am not real sure about this, has anyone here heard of that before? Anyway, when I find something out about the rims I will let you all know.

Why just 7.5" if your going with 235's defitnaly with 8" wide(if you can). Yes I have heard of and had a set of rims that hvae been customed fitted like you described above. My answer to it dont do it I took a risk with my previous 17x7.5 chrome Alba rims(on my older car), and no matter what I did(alignment wise) I could never stop the steering wheel from jerking at high speeds even with hub centric rims. But if your willing to deal with jerking in the steering wheel, especially at triple digit speeds then by all means go for it. Thats why I learned my lesson and will only by fitted rims for all my cars nothing specially drilled unless it high quality like HRE.
