Now where is everybody? Maybe I got some bad whiskey or something, but where is everybody? Am I in the twilight zone? First time in two years I have not seen a GENIII guy elated or honked off in a 24 hour period about something. (Geez, guess I have become hooked on this).

I have a Cobra, and it works damn well. (detected a cop from around a corner.. and another one from over a hill)
But last night, it was late, I was tired and cranky, all I wanted was my bed. :/
Too bad the cop didn't tag the person in front of me, who I couldn't even keep up with.

Oh well.. no complaining here. No ticket. :D

Yeah that Cobra does good..the BEL980 I have used on long 100 mile stretches in the western US and it is one superb unit.

But, due to some magical work, it was changed to a warning. wink
Some people don't take it seriously when I say to mention my name when being pulled over...no bribery or blackmail involved.

I got a warning shortly after I got the car a few years ago, but not since, and no tickets for over 2 decades at this point (yes, I am vigoriously pounding on the oak desk about now). I forget the name of the radar detector I had been using last, but it is on the shelf at the moment since they are against the law now in this province. We intend to shift coasts out to BC in a bit under 2 years. They are legal out there, so it will come out of storage then. It is worth keeping in mind that, though you have the inverse square law on your side, you will still get virtually no warning from the instant on type of hand radar guns, provided the user is not holding the trigger down a lot. :)

Let me give you guys the ABSOLUTLY best advice about the top notch radar detectors, THEY SUCK. The ONLY thing that may come close to helping you out is having a radar detector that has a REALLY long range to it so that you maybe can pick up up the shot at the car before you.

Other than that, if an officer sees the detector in your car after you have been pulled over, you can about be assured a ticket. It basically says that you were "meaning" to speed and were basically saying you could get away with it.

To this day, almost the best way to get out of a ticket is to not be going WAY over the speed limit, say 9-15 over, and telling the truth when you are pulled. Officer's do not pull you just for the **** of it, the pull you because you were doing wrong. If most people in this world would just be polite and tell the blantent truth, most would walk away.

You would be ABSOLUTELY amazed at how many people you will see them not wering a seatbelt for instance and CLEARLY see it at that. When you get up to them they have tried to slide it on and say "No you are wrong, I had it on." HELLO people, I mean, we are not dumb.

So anyway like I said, trash the detector, and get right and just be HONEST and POLITE, thats all it takes, TRUST ME, I KNOW! :D

I agree with Tunez, I was pulled over on my way too Fairview, OK. and the officer let me go with just a warning. He asked me why I was speeding, and all I said was, " I have no reason, I should know better, I will slow down". Now read on and learn of my stupidity!!!

The VERY next month I was pulled over for speeding (I'm an idiot) by the SAME officer within a mile of the other spot!!I was on my way back from Fairview, OK. When the officer asked for my license and insurance... Just my luck I left the new insurance on the kitchen table @ home that I had gotten a few days prior to getting pulled over and like a dumb fart, forgot to put in the car AND my drivers license was expired and I didn't even know it. SOOOOO..... after telling the officer that I had NO excuse and I even told him that I was an idiot and that I was not racing home for an emergency brain tumor removal, he gave me a warning for the speeding and told me to put the new insurance in my car, he did give me a ticket for the expired drivers license but told me all I had to do was make a photo copy of the new one and fax it somewhere attn: this person and it would be like I never got the ticket. I did all that he asked me to do within 3 weeks (no just kidding), I did it all the very next morning and man was I lucky!!

I now try to obey the speed limit. I enjoy hearing the exhaust roar, but there's so many warnings you can get before you finally get a high cost speeding ticket! I like getting next to a Honda or Eclipse with a 4 foot diamater tail pipe and beating the crap out of it to the next light, but I loose some of the "cool guy" effect when I look in my back seat and see 2 car seats and a bunch of toys and I can hear the rattles rattling.

The BEL980 has been proven to be the best long range snooper in the history of radar detection. It is a thing of beauty...it does not suck. The ******/Passport flirts with the number one rating but who really cares? Nothing will detect the instant-on feature of a prudent state trooper. I rarely ever exceed the posted limit by more than 15mph and that is 85mph on most of my runs. There is nothing that will jump start your heart quite like an instant-on zap from a state trooper when you are running about 100 and you are radar detected. But I don't think many guys on this forum cruise at 65...probably not even you Tunez.

What most people don't understand is that "instant on" is not a "special" feature though. A "non" instant on radar is nothing but a radar that has to calibrate the speed through the radar immediatly after it is turned on. The instant on radars are only different in the fact that as soon as you use the tuning forks to calibrate the radar it is ready to go.

More corrections to some misconceptions:
1. You can be clocked by an Officer behind you, moving or not.
2. We can clock you coming and going.
3. We can also clock you BEHIND us moving or stationary as well.

About the only thing we can't do is to clock you at a severe angle. Throws the radar speed WAY off. Is it coming in the future, I'm sure it is.

Other things to remember, you do not have to be clocked to be given a speeding ticket. Others ways are through being "paced" or just Officer estimates of your speed. Although the for the estimate part to be valid the Officer has to be radar certified. When you go through radar school, you have to do MANY estimates as you clock as well. For pacing, any Officer can do it. With that in mind, the next time you guys are riding down the highway and a patrol car is in front of you, DON'T speed up with him. Chances are he may just be trying to see how fast that you are willing to go. That is perfectly within any law for us to do that.

Like I said, the MOST important thing is to just be FLAT out honest! It might not work ALL the time but you stand a FAR beter chance of getting away than you do lying. Also if you choose to use a radar detector, for goodness sake, when you get pulled please try to either turn it off or put it away. That is unless it will be easy for the officer to see you do it. The nice thing to do f you feel you HAVE to have one is to get a dash mounted unit that all you see is that lights and have an external speaker somewhere. That is about the ONLY thing in a detector that I would suggest.

And last but not least, with the 5-15 over thing, that would apply to different spped zones. I mean you don't want to be going 50 in a 35 where as 80 in a 65 doesn't look QUITE as bad. Not a good idea but none the less, still better. I personally try and stay around 9 over max although I could probably get away with more. I am not big into writing speeding tickets unless they are just plain unsafe places to be doing the speeds that the person is doing.

Tunez, well duh! There's rear facing radar now, as well as the shunned trick of zapping handheld into a mirror, though that's for stationary :D Around here in new england, generally on a 3-4 lane highway you can do 15 over, 1 and 2 lane is usually a strict 10 over. But yes, being honest is one of the best ways to have the warning box checked off, instead of the infraction box. It especially works being a 20 year old!! The one thing I feel bad about is troopers using laser, though there's no getting out of that one. One tagged Karen and I one time, we blew by him so fast I think he shut the door on himself trying to get back in the car!!! beer

Yeah, the new Talon and Falcon handheld radars are bad too. They have a GOOD bit more range than the old style handhelds and real accurate too. You can actually bounce them off of any flat surface, not just a mirror. The scariest thing about the handhelds is just that, you don't have to use them in anything specific. Nothing like passing a beat up hooptie ride and then getting pulled shorty after by a marked unit. We do that alot in some of the neighborhoods where speeding is a REAL problem. Hop in someone's beat up personal car and run the radar and let the marked units get the cars a block or more away.

I strongly suspect that this is actually a function of the jurisdiction. Here in Nova Scotia that would be considered entrapment and get tossed out, assuming the ticketed party tried to fight it. I believe that would be true in Ontario, Alberta, and BC also, but it might not be true in Quebec or New Brunswick. Is there variance in the US for differing States this way also?

Tunez, I would have to agree with Stephen on this one.

Should a radio car be breaking the law when the officer is not responding to an emergency situation? No.

Does it bother me to see radio cars breaking the speed limit in such situations? Not in the least.

Does an officer of the law have the right to bait a civilian with the intent of issuing a citation? No, it is illegal. The problem is proving it in a court of law.

Right now you have a gun and shield and you can write a civilian a ticket. Just remember that life is cyclical. Someday when you retire or otherwise leave the force, you will no longer have a shield. You will again be a civilian. Do you want to be baited?

My point is to treat others how you would like to be treated.

My friend was driving his Civic Si down this 4 lane road doing about 65mph in a 45mph zone. My friends radar dosen't go off. The cop drives past him the other way. The cop makes a you turn and turns on his lights and pulls my firend over. The cop comes to the window and sees his radar detector and gives him a warning about speeding. Because the cop didn't radar him so it is good to have a radar detector sometimes.

I wouldn't be without my VAL 1. Here in the flatlands it can pick up radar up to 4 miles away no matter what direction it's pointed or if they are over a hill. Assuming they have it on.....
