92 MTX pressure plate failing or something else related to it?

Popping noises while rolling and in gear can be lower control arm ball joint (check for torn grease boot and any looseness), outer tie rod end ball joint (same checks), sway bar frame bushings (only if polyurethane bushings are installed) or even the strut rod front frame mount welds broken (can...

    MTX Teardown help.

I replaced the synchronizer blocking rings using the detailed exploded views, with individual parts labeled, in the older Chilton's Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable 1986-92 Repair Manual, Part No. 8251 (see attached images). The later Chilton's Taurus/Sable 1986-95 Repair Manual, Part No. 26700 did not...

Hard to shift at high rpm

If your initial story indicates that your car moved forward and you smelled clutch material burning, then this is most likely a throwout bearing failure, possibly in combination with a pressure plate or clutch disk failure. Do a test with the engine at idle and the transmission in neutral...

    Water pump

You really only need the outer casting of the water pump rather than the whole part. The replacement kits usually come with the outer casing and a new gasket to mate it to the back case. All of the wear items are in the output casing including the seal and bearing. You should also plan to...

Timing belt/water pump replacement question.. specifically timing

A note of caution. These engines can accumulate enough carbon buildup on the piston crowns to become interference engines. Please don't ask me how I know. If the timing marks on the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets are aligned with the white marks on the timing belt the engine is correctly...

Heat goes down at red light

Is the air blowing from the vents less warm, or is there less air flow from this vents? If the latter, the dampers may be redirecting the flow to the defroster ducting and this would be due to a vacuum leak, likely in the small diameter plastic hoses that penetrate the firewall. If the former...

Book Rate for Valve Lash Adjustment?

Speaking for Scott, I used to service other SHOs (about 2 dozen gap jobs), but the schedule in the near future, with heavy work hours, vacation, building a new house, selling my current house (tonight), preparing to move and driving daughter to club volleyball nationals in Indianapolis all in...

No Spark After Replacing Crank Sensor and Water Pump

The tachometer signal is sourced from the CID sensor and when it fails, rpms can show zero. If the CID is failing, the engine can be tough to start as the cam position is provided to the EEC to synchronize the spark. If no signal, the EEC has a 1 in 3 chance of getting the right coil to fire...

    Random battery light

Luigisho said it well regarding the failure rates of the alternator and starter. I bought a remanufactured Ultima brand alternator from O'Reilly with a LLT warranty and have replaced it eight (8) times over the years. Some of the outside-of-USA remans have lasted only days. A new battery is a...

89 SHO wouldn't start; started fine 4 hours later

I am thinking of the same causes as itwonder; CPS or fuel pump. As they are near their end-of-life, they will both exhibit heat-related failures where they will function again after cooling down. How does that fuel pump sound when it primes as you turn the ignition key to ON? Does it have the...

The dreaded y pipe. Mocha sho

Which emissions component is causing the test to fail? If it is HC, then you have to correct the problem that is causing incomplete combustion of the fuel. If it is the NOx being too high, which I suspect is the problem, that is the job of the EGR system, which you stated in your original post...

    New.........really OLD member

Now, those names are a blast from the past. Good to see you guys still check back in the Forum once in a while. I do more often lately since installing Tapatalk on the phone. I still have the SHO and even made it to the Fort Worth convention in 2014 where she won a silver award in the car show...

Gen I Air Bag Clockspring Source

I wanted to bring up this old topic because the failed air bag clockspring once again became an issue with my '91 SHO and this is the top thread that is returned in my Forum searches. The Ford part may have been discontinued, but Dorman makes a compatible part for the Gen I (with air bag) and...

    Strut noise

As a lifetime owner of Tokico struts, I found another source of a popping noise in the front suspension. It was sourced from the strut insert moving on the centering pin in the base of the strut housing. This was due originally to the incorrectly torqued nut securing the cartridge in the...

Gen 1 Front Motor Mount Recommendations?

The rear mount is subject to leaks from the power steering pump and rear bank valve cover seal. The rubber is damaged from the fluids.

WTB: All 4 brake calipers for gen 1

I have the original knuckles, calipers and caliper brackets for the pre-Jan 91 front that were removed during the upgrade to the '96 parts. Send PM if interested.

Putting in a UDP. What else?

I am surprised to read about Dayco timing belts whining. I have used several brands, including Dayco over the miles, but have never heard one make a whining noise. That may have more to do with tension on the belt or the state of the other gear in the belt's path such as tensioner bearings or...

New Owner of 1991 SHO Plus

Welcome to the SHO. I smiled to myself when you wrote that 209K was high mileage. For a properly maintained SHO engine, that is only near the end of the break-in period. I had assembled a spreadsheet of the usual parts for sources and prices, but the O'Reilly, AutoZone, RockAuto names were...

    oil

The comment about not switching oils was to give credit to Castrol GTX for allowing my engine to accumulate 435,000 miles with no oil related problems. The SHO was just on the track at the convention last summer and ran like it was made for it.

    oil

The FL1-A holds more, but does not fit in all cases. Like mine. The FL-400/FL-400S has served my car for all its miles. Along with Castrol GTX 10W-30, regular, not high mileage.
