I got half the rod off (half that bolts into the tranny). Found that the other end wraps around the shifter, not just bolts into it. Tried dropping the shifter assembly out, but realized I had to take my exhaust off to give the shifter room to drop. So I got everthing out finally...
This might sound weird, but that happened to me one time... I pushed the hazards a whole bunch of times, then it mysteriously started to work. Odd, I know, but it happened. Really it did.
Wait, if I understand correctly, you aren't supposed to use gear oil? Is there a specific reason for that? Because I was going to change mine this weekend and I was going to use castrol 80w90 gear oil...
