Here is a before and after pic of my 93. I can now "electronically" modify any eatc to work in our cars. I will post the procedure soon. My left hand is broken, so I can't bother with typing right now.

I love these new units. They really look like they belong.

It's not technically difficult, just tedious. I'll post the info late tonight or tomorrow.

Does Ford make an EATC unit with pictograms instead of words labelling the buttons?

I don't ever want to let my kids play with those buttons while I drive. That's why I make sure they are sitting on my left knee rather my right one. Having an ATX means my left knee is just along for the ride anyway. :D

I just think pictograms are more classy/sophisticated/universal. I see that North American automakers are finally beginning to use them, about 2 decades after European manufacturers.

    Jeremy,

The eatc in my picture is out of a 99 Crown Vic. The procedure will be beyond the abilities of some people, so I will probably offer to modify some for $30.00 or so. This will not be profit; it will be more to keep my wife happy while I do more “damn SHO stuff”.

I'm a computer engineer of 20 years and my customary hourly rate is $100.00, so modifying these units will be more of a favor than anything else. But I'd be happy to do yours if you'd like.

PS: When you do see these units in other cars, they often modified the button face to make it work. This won't work in a lot of instances, and IMHO the electrical mod is easier and cleaner.

How much does an ECC from a Crown Vic run? The part I mean?

I paid $50 for mine. Since they don't break, there’s not much of a market for them.

hey drdave i'm glad you didn't take my post the wrong way, i was woried that it would look like i was being an ass. this is really cool you've figure out how to rewire the internals, i had a electronics friend look at one and he said it would be hard to change the hard wiring without having a scematic which ford would not give me (been there done that :p ). it's always pissed me off that the 96-newer grand marquis/crown vic unit seem to 99% work, they just wouldn't use the blower motor. as i'm sure you know and have fixed! this is great! i was near giving up. but now my sho will be that much less rare. :(

ps.. i notice your norm a/c and vent buttons are reversed, is athat a boo boo or is there a reason for that. just curious. :)

    SLOSHO,

As I expected someone to ask this, yes I do. I have a picture of the unit in every mode. The information shows up in different places than the original unit, and the numbers are now the same size as the radio and clock. In the original unit they are larger. I will post these pictures as well; I just didn't think that they were very interesting. My unit looks just like yours, it just uses the soft-touch button pad with the new display. Outside of that, it's the same (hint-hint).

    Ohioshodude,

Your post didn't bother me at all. Of course that could be because I didn't really understand the last part of it! :) Not a mistake, this is where vent works on my unit. You will soon understand. And I hope to get a replacement for the norm that says panel/floor.

    SHOfun 93,

I got my unit from a fellow brother here on the Forum.

BTW: There is nothing at all magical about this modification. In fact, it's probably not what some of you are expecting, and some may be pissed at how simple it really is. But it does work and it looks great.

All you are doing is buying peoples EATCs with broken buttons and stuff, then switching the display and buttons on to the old one right? I figured that was how you did it.
