Turbo SHO HOW-TO...

    ok heres a list:
    -48#injectors
    -255lph pump
    -shonut fuel regulator sys
    -good tune
    -custom alum intake pipes/Ti exhaust pipes (i get it for free :)
    -custom free flowing exhaust is going to be fab'd
    -not sure what turbo i woudl be aiming for

    im sure i have the supporting mods to take full advantage of my set up
    -3.2 mtx
    -80mm MAF
    -BBB
    -Freshly rebuilt heads
    -10.4mm Taylor plug wires
    -UDPs
    -Stage 1 cams
    -Aggressive head port job
    -Polished bowl
    -oversized valves
    -gasket matched intake plenum

    now with this set up, i am looking for a safe 350+whp. what kind of turbos should i be looking for?

    sounds good. i think your motor has taken the most boost than any other sho. 22psi is alot already.


    and rocket: with all the stuff your planning 8-10 psi should net you more than 350 with the right tune.

    I remember a certain turboSHO with a broken W/G line seeing more than 20psi. I also remember that car hauling ass:dribble::rofl:

    Is sizing the fuel pump as simple as injector size times six? Or did my brain not boot up properly this morning.

    2 choices really...

    155LPH (good for all boltons...not enough for boosting over 10PSI...no pressure regulator needed)

    190LPH (good for whatever you can throw at it...needs Pressure regulator).

    Ok, yeah I got it now. I was thinking both injectors and pump as lbs./hr. Hey Tim, I was curious how that turbo spools? Or did you go with a different A/R? Which turbo are you planning on using in your next build?

    While a 190lph will flow a lot of fuel, it will be on the ragged edge for some FI cars making more than 450whp. Keep in mind that a 48lb/hr injector means just that. In one hour, at 100%, it will flow 48lbs of fuel. So all 6 will flow 288lbs/hr. One liter of fuel weighs about 1.6lbs. So a 190lph pump is rated to flow 304lbs/hr of fuel. And since the BSFC of FI engines is generally higher than that of NA engines, I would be wary of cutting my fuel supply system so close. I would say that a 190lph pump is plenty for 42lb/hr injectors and smaller. Anything larger and a 255lph pump would be wise. It is always good to have some margin built in.

    It is for sure slower spooling that the previous turbo, and as such, the boost comes on slower, which equates to less TQ (same hp though, around 390whp for 14psi, but 30ft lbs less tq).

    I currently have a T66 with a fairly large A/R. It will spool even slower (which should be a little easier on my gears), but should be able to make a TON of power up top, as I want to rev this next engine to 7500+rpm.

    Hey tim I know you have the full size T66 already but did you ever look into getting the hybrid version of it( I think the A/R was .63 on the turbine). It would be the best of both worlds. One more Q is this turbo going to be a BB turbo???

    yeah they did, its pretty sweet lookin. from what i heard the guy got beat in a race with his ford gt while it was stock, so he upgraded to twin turbo

    becasue they want to keep it a secrete. So we can bitch about people not searching.

    with how cheap 255lph pumps are (same price if not cheapier than 190lph or 155lph) go with the 255 they are about 80 bucks why mess with it for that money just get the big one.

    it is the same story with the 48 lb injectors. don't go smaller like I did because you will likely end up upgrading it later because boost is like crack. 10psi felt good 15 will feal even better... and it does :)

    Toolman Tim, thanks for your great work on this. After studying this for some time, I'd like to summarize what I think the collective though is - can you let me know if this is correct?

    For a real budget setup, a guy could use the stock engine (including mafs, fuel pump, and injectors) and run around 5-7 psi, getting close to 300 chp or around 250 whp, using a fmu or reprogramming the pcm. (Would this need to be intercooled?)

    The next step up, cost-wise, would be the limit of stock internals at around 13-15 psi, which would require larger injectors, mafs, and fuel pump and fpr, along with reprogramming the pcm. This type of setup could produce over 400 chp or over 350 whp (maybe more?) if properly tuned and intercooled.

    For over 15 psi, the stock pistons need to be replaced with forged ones at somewhat lower compression ratio, and over 20 psi is workable.

    Somewhere, better cams become important - would that be more than 10 psi? More than 15?

    Now here's another question - has anyone set one of these up with a draw-through throttle body rather than blowing through it? (I hate blow-off valves...)

    Yes tims current setup is drawn through. I guess the tunablilty is better

    The BOV is needed anyways blow-through or draw-through.,

    The BOV is there to blow off extra be slammed into the TB when it slams closed in decel, shifts, ect

    Boost on the stock setub is a joke really

    Tim and I went over this, and his thoughts were about the same as mine.

    5-6psi on the stock injectors(i'm using modified 3.2's), bigger pump (155-190), a bigger MAF(Pro-M 75mm is what i'm using) would prove to be better, a small or adj. FMU (something on the order of 4:1 or 6:1), and a small intercooler for hotter climate cars.

    Should keep things within the safe margin and prove to be very fun and very reliable.

    Re-read his statement.

    And I agree, boost on a stock setup is a joke. However, tweak it alittle and IMHO your'e set.

    I think 7psi non-IC'd is certainly workable. Not ideal, but workable.

    Sounds pretty spot on.

    I have never used anything but stock heads/cams. Would cams and head/work net me some nice power? Surely, but for the cost, I would rather just enjoy what I have. Making power all the way to redline with the stock stuff now, but it would be interesting to see what kind of gains head work and cams would give.

    I believe Josh T has a drawthrough TB in his S/C'd application.
