So, my SHO just ticked over 35,000 on the clock. What sort of things, if any, do you advise doing before the B2B part of the warranty expires?

Thus far the car has been boringly reliable (just the way I like it). The only annoyances that I have experienced are these two things:

    1. The Nav seems to lose connection to the satellites more often than it really should, prompting the error message. The maps also seem to be out of date (there's a LOT of construction in my area). This does not seem like a warranty issue. ;) Just annoying.

    2. I frequently park the car and use the fob to restart the car while I am in a store. About a quarter of the time the car refuses to restart, and instead honks at me one time. If this happens I hit the remote start when I exit the store, an it remote starts every time. I read that it was possibly a battery issue with the fob, so I replaced the battery and it still does it. The battery in the car is still strong. Complain to Ford or nah?

What other substantive maintenance/inspection things should I be doing? Also, I'm trying to decide if an extended warranty (of any sort) is worth it. OT1H, I know that extended warranties rarely pay for themselves (that's why Ford sells them). OTOH, this is my daily driver and I will be putting about 20k on it a year.

    Thanks,

    Mike

What is the original factory powetrain portion of the warranty? Look into extending it just before the time/mileage end of warranty (cheaper).
I hate extended warranties. Historically they are a waste of money. However, these cars are complicated enough to actually pull the trigger on one. All wheel drive and twin turbo have so many extra areas that are likely to fail. Water pumps that leak internally and can kill the bearings/motor. Even mild design flaws with direct injection and valvetrain gooing up. Most direct injection gas engines are switching to adding injectors in traditional positions to help with oil/carbon valve issues.

I would get one if I was going to keep it much past the original warranty. CYA

What year is it? I would certainly complain about the GPS satellite thing, something's ringing a bell, they might have an updated antenna or something.

For your GPS, you need the updated maps SD card from Ford.

Not sure. I bought the car used. I just know that bumper to bumper expires soon.

"I would get one if I was going to keep it much past the original warranty. CYA"

Yeah, my though was to go with powertrain, but probably not bumper to bumper.

"What year is it? I would certainly complain about the GPS satellite thing, something's ringing a bell, they might have an updated antenna or something. "

    OK, I'll ask. It's a 16.

"For your GPS, you need the updated maps SD card from Ford."

Is this for the maps, or for the connectivity issue? Or both?

Your connectivity issue could be your area. GPS are not completely accurate in areas that have large amounts of trees, mountains, ect. If you have XM radio and are driving through a mountain area....it cuts out. The more open the area, the better the GPS works.

You said your maps are out of date. The maps is the SYNC are not updated by Ford. They use an pre mapped SD that is updated yearly. Your issue is an out of date SD maps card issue. Depending on your card you could be 2 to 3 updates behind.

That is the most updated SD card to date^

Several months ago my '15 was approaching end of warranty. My B2B expired long ago. I followed the advice on the forum and went to Zeigler Ford (lucky for my only a 30 minute drive) with the intention of extending the drive train 2 years. After talking with the agent, I ended up with full warranty with B2B for 3 years for not that much more than the cost of a 2 year drive train only warranty. And Ford offers an interest free payment plan for those who need it.

Yeah, pretty sure it is not my area. It tends to happen in overcast conditions, though not always, and my phone and other devices seem to have no problems connecting. The terrain here is flat (no mountains), and I'm not in between buildings or under trees much.

As far as updating the maps, yeah, I figured I'm dealing with older maps. Not sure I want to pay to update the nav, though, as I just use Waze or Google. Didn't even know I had an SD card, I though that updates went through the USB port in the center console.

2016 should be SYNC3 and no SD card for maps. The maps are stored in the APIM.

Yep, Sync3. So, do you DL the updates, or take it to Ford for them to install? Any idea on price?

I haven't done it. I believe you can order a USB drive with the updates, you will need the VIN

Just to double confirm, sync 3 does store the nap data internal to the APIM. This is separate software from the human machine interface. Whe you perform a SYNC update, you do not get maps.

You can go to the dealerships parts department and work with them to make sure you have an update. Bring the car with you because they may need to look up some stuff on the apim itself in addition to the VIN.

All map updates are customer pay btw.

As for your gps loss do you just get the word gps within a red circle and a slash through it, but the navigation works? The system can lose gps signal and still function in this state.

Fords maps are generated/provided by a company called "HERE" and if you go to their website it might tell you if there is a map update or not. You can also go to that sight to make suggested updates to outdatated data.

My honest suggestion if you are for it, use android auto or apple car play. If you have an apple phone you may need a new media hub for apple car play to work. Both apple and android need to be at sync version 2.0 or 2.2 to function. Awesome systems.

I think I did a pretty good write up about the car honk thing and remote start a while back.

The car makes the bonk-bonk noise and the error message flashes on the screen. I believe it just says "Maps not functioning normally" or "GPS not functioning" or something like that. I'll try to pay attention the next time it happens. I never tried to navigate with it when it did that. Hell, I'll be honest, I never use it to navigate at all. Waze and Google Maps have just killed onboard nav/gps. I usually have the screen set to "home" where it is split between maps, phone, climate and stereo info, it is handy to have the map scrolling along as you drive, but for actual navigation I use my phone.

I have used Sync's Android Auto feature, and it works OK on the car end, but it is a freaking PITA on the phone end, so I hardly use it.

I'll have to look for the honk/remote start write up. Is it something I should bring to Ford's attention, or just fix myself?

I upgraded from SYNC2 with nav to SYNC3 without nav and then SYNC3 with nav. Still use Waze through carplay.

Definitely get a picture of the error message about gps and try to note when it occurs so the dealership can duplicate it.

I never got my car fixed. I think my wake circuit from the bcm to the pcm is faulted. I've just never got around to overlaying the wire to rule it out or point to the pcm.

    https://shoforum.com/index.php?threads/remote-start.134584/

that's the thread i put some info in regarding remote start that i was thinking of.

I really hope you can get the dealership to get your remote start to act up and verify the "other" PID for remote start is changing state. This would point to the wake circuit, BCM, or the PCM.

Look at your rear tail lights to make sure the lenses are not wearing/damaging your paint. Especially the on the trunk mounted lamps.

Hmm. Is that a thing? Because I have a paint chip that came out from the corner of the trunk lid, Ford said that it was not covered because it looked like the previous owner did it when popping the lamp assembly out.

Is there a TSB or something about this?

No just multiple cars do It. I missed having mine covered because i thought it was wax residue. If the lenses contacts the trunk and the lenses cant be adjusted to get the proper gap i would think that would be enough for waranty.
