We were watching this Bloodborne Pathogens video made by BLR for nursing class orientation today, and there was a part comparing working without protection to "entering a high-performance road race simply because you know how to drive," and during that part, they were playing some video of the old factory races, and three of the ninja turtle SHOs went zooming by! If I had a pic, I'd post it, but it's on the ol' VHS.

When those cars ended up in the Canadian Firehawk series, I drove with the team that was running them up here, but not in one of the SHOs. The team was also running a 5.0L Mustang, and a 91 Escort GT. The Escort had the Ninja team graphics on it, the hood had the rat or whatever animal the master was. I co-drove that car in the 1992 24 hr. race at Mosport. :)

I'll ask my instructor on Friday and see if I can get a VHS copy, I know I have a couple tapes lying around here somewhere. There were three SHOs I saw, a couple CRXs or Civics, and a Porsche. I don't remember the other cars. Ed, that's cool you were racing them back in the day. If you have any pics, please share!

Great photo from the U.S. Firehawk days. I think the only one I might have is of the Escort when it was in pit lane, and I'm climbing over the wall for the driver change. Really have to try get my old race photos scanned so I can put them up on the Intraweb.

The Escort was a great little car. Not the fastest thing in class by any means, but dead-nuts reliable. We did tires, fuel, front brake pads, and half a quart of oil in 24 hours ... that was it. And my two co-drivers (whom I had raced with before) were both not especially kind to equipment. We finished 6th in class, 15th overall, out of about 40 cars total that started. It was a pretty busy race, the SCCA World Challenge series was running at the same time, so we had just over 60 cars out there. That's just about full for Mosport. ;)

    cheers

Nope, the Firehawk refered to in this thread is the racing series in Canada in the early 90s.

Ed, do yo know Bob Bruce, he pit crew'd for the SHO cars a few times. He has posted some of his pics from the race series here before.

The full name was the Firestone Firehawk Endurance Series. It was a semi-pro road-race series for production cars, ran as 3 or 4 classes, cars segregated by engine size and vehicle size and weight. Race lengths varied from 3 hours to a full 24 hours. It was very popular in the late 80s / early 90s, there were some huge fields, sometimes close to 100 cars in the U.S. races, and up to 80 cars in the Canadian series.

As the name implies, the main sponsor was Firestone, and the cars had to run on spec Firestone Firehawk performance street tires. Unfortunately this was back in the days before they merged with Bridgestone, so the tires were less than stellar. I seem to remember "Firerock" being a popular nickname for the tires at the time. Not much grip, but they wore extremely well.

I only competed in 2 races in the series. The 24 hr. at Mosport I had mentioned previously, in the Canadian series, and then the following year in the U.S. series at the Sebring Florida 12 hr. race, in a friend's 5.0L Mustang.

Bill, was Bob Bruce on the crew when the Turtle cars were still in the U.S., or when they came up to Canada? The name doesn't sound familiar, but it was more than 15 years ago ... and I have a terrible memory for names at the best of times. :p

    cheers

Are those photos owned by someone on here? Are they Bob's or are they another former Firehawk fan? There were some neat photos in the "all gallery" section.

    http://www.pbase.com/mwphoto

But I don't want to post the exact pictures here, as it asks to have permission first. So theres the link.

That is cool! But I only see the Turtles in two events. I'm sure they were in many more, and his picture collection is only partial. Correct? Still, very neat looking at those old pictures!
