I think it may be time to tighten up the ability of new users to post - 4 ads reported this morning, more yesterday, etc. etc.

    This^^^^^^^.

I find myself "pre-reading" in the little window that pops up when you hold the curser over the title, before I click on the entry. But sometimes you miss this step and you find yourself in some crazy get rich at home scheme.

I am paranoid about clicking onto anything potentially infectious, to the point that I moved away from the windows operating system, because I consider myself the perfect useful idiot when it comes to technology that can harm you.

I would suggest that not only a waiting period for new members be observed, but the first post must be an "introduction" post that must be approved before allowing entry.

The people who sign up and post a rescue request right away will be frustrated by this, but lets face it, they are not going to be the next generation of forum members anyways.

Our main filter to stop spam is that if it is your first post and you post a link in it, then that will be held for moderation. That has gotten most of the spammers in the past...
These recent ones posted the links in the title and no links in the post's body which got them through the filter. Not sure if I can filter based on the title...looking into it.

another one today with the link in the subject.

I agree with sperold - I suggest that every first post be required to have moderator approval before it appears.

I think the requirement to have all new posts be approved would add a large workload to the moderation team and posibly discourage new members.

I would rather find a way to stop them from getting through. I am working on how to stop this new type of spam.

The first thing I do every morning when I wake up is delete all the spam posts and ban the thread starters. The criteria that Jordan had set up was weeding out a lot of the spam for quite a while. They are getting wiser with their ways though. On a typical day I delete 6 to 10 posts. You guys haven't been seeing those posts till recently. The forum will need to adapt as the spam does.

We do this at the registration point. I am going to change the question to help stop spammers at that point.

I have added some new ban keywords and will continue to do so. The spam is pretty repetitive, so I don't know if we need to go to the extreme of requiring moderation of all first time member posts, but that certainly would be a stop gap if we cannot get it under control.

Keyword suggestions welcome to filter based on.

Jordan, can you set up the thread title to reject the letters "http://" because they seem to all be starting the link with that. I don't recall seeing legit threads with a link in the title.

I have done some research and think I have them locked out now with a new filter. If it doesn't work then I am at least very close to a solution to this problem.
