So we are in the research stage of shopping for a brand new or <50k mile new-used vehicle.

Our rigs are getting old, and have a tendency, even when maintained properly, to nickle and dime us from time to time. The $$ isnt the problem though, spending the time to fix it is.

So we are looking to find a new rig. A garage queen that we can jump in, and go wherever we want without worry or blinking an eye. We dont drive much (less than 3k miles a year) so I expect this to be the last vehicle we ever buy. So I want to do it right.

    The requirements:

    Ubber reliable
    Seating for 4
    Decent amount of cargo/gear/dog space
    AWD or 4x4
25+MPG HWY. Im shooting for 30!
    <$30k new
Local dealer to handle any and all problems when under warranty

We have a Toyota, Subaru, Jeep and Ford dealer local.

With all of this in mind, Ive formed the following list. Please discuss.

    *Toyota Rav4
    [IMG]
    *Subaru Outback
    [IMG]
    *Subaru Forester
    [IMG]
    *Jeep Liberty

And though Im shying away from Ford, Id like to consider the Escape
    [IMG]

Id like to discuss anything and everything. But specifically the following:

Motor options, and their known problems.
Auto trans used, known problems, etc. FYI I do not want a manual gearbox.
AWD systems, and what is ideal, problematic, etc
    Overall reliability.

    Take your time.
I appreciate any and all responses!

Liberty Diesel. If you buy new, the warranty will fix the stupid little issues that they have. (AC issues) Other than the AC, havent seen many issues with the Jeeps, especially with the diesel (If they offer them still)

I was thinking about these too. I do not think they offer them in the Liberty anymore, but I know they did.

Go with the forester. My dad has one, bought it a couple years ago. It gets almost 30 mpg on the highway and is dead reliable. Plenty of space inside and tons of nifty features. The center console slides and has multiple configurations, its pretty neat, and they have humongous sunroofs. The one in my dads go from the front and continues all the way back to the rear seats. The cabin finishes are nice and the seats are comfy, the rear seat actually reclines and theres plenty of cargo room behind the rear seats too, plus you can get roof rails and cross bars as a factory option. The standard motor is a 170 hp and 170 lb-ft boxer 4 or you can opt up for a 225 hp turbo boxer 4 that will suck down premium fuel and has a significantly higher price tag. The base motor is more than enough for the forester, its fairly light for an suv and moves nicely plus you cant beat the gas mileage on reqular fuel. Im not sure if they have changed the tranny since the 09s but my dads has a 4 speed auto which may seem kind of old tech but the dealership told him that it works very well and lasts forever so if it isnt broke dont fix it kind of thing. The awd is brilliant in inclement weather and he has never had any problems with it nor have i had any problems with my impreza. I highly recommend the forester out of the choices you have listed. Id go with that over the outback if you choose a subaru just on looks alone.

Take a look at a Honda Pilot. I had a 2009 until I bought my SHO, was a real nice car. They come in a few different models, from base cloth to leather, nav, and TVs in the back. Has a 4wd system with a locking diff and gets 25 on the hwy. Its a pretty big car inside but it doesnt look it from out.

Dude... Ford is coming up in the reliability dept in the last few years... I think I know the perfect car that will fit all your needs...

Ford Fusion... They have an AWD, decent cargo space, uber reliable, 30+mpg, and under 30k. Here... I built one for you

My old Boss had a Liberty, The transmission went at 40,000 Miles. The Brand new one they replaced it with went out 11,000 Miles later.

My current Boss HAD a liberty Diesel. He said it was fairly reliable but for some reason got Terrible Gas Mileage. That's just what I've heard.

If it were my Choice, I would choose either Subaru's, The Forester or the Outback. I would probably go with the Forester.

I have an 07 Rav4 V6... mpg may not be quite where you need it, but it'll bring s a smile to your face every time you punch the gas. It's my wife's DD and I couldn't be happier with it. Let me know if you have specific ?'s and I'll be neutral.

They did; it's called the Escape - and it's already in your list. You really shouldn't throw Ford by the wayside for quality nowadays. They're pretty good. I'd put them above the current Chrysler any day of the week, while we're at it. (Future Chrysler is a different story)

Oh, and my mom had an 06 escape limited=crap... she traded into an 08 edge much nicer, but not in the same league. Also, rented a dodge nitro aka liberty and it was a total POS. Again not biased, just a guy who has a Rav4 and has been exposed to the other two. The forester and outback are really the only competition IMO.

My wife and I have a Honda CR-V and she loves it. It has 205k on the clock and the tranny shifts like new. It has a couple of small issues like a front wheel hub and a leaky valve cover gasket, but we get 20 or so in town and up to 25 on the freeway. Ours is a 97, the first year they came out. so far so good.

    * Liberty reliability issues..... Ive read enough and heard enough here to follow my gut instinct. I dont want to chance a Chrysler product. I tossed the Liberty in there for kicks, mainly because the styling appeals to me.

    * Im not buying Honda. Im not buying Honda. Dont make me say it again.

    * New Rav 4 = Fun. Ive read that, and have heard it many times. My brother in law is a Toyota tech. He LOVES them.

    * Lots of love for the Forester. Im seeing and hearing that every day. And the styling of the NEW ones, is growing on me.

    * The Fusion is a Sedan, not a wagon. The Escape is a SUV, NOT a wagon. And my shying away from Ford has little to do with reliability, and more to do with overall styling as well as fit and finish of the Escape.

    * Im not buying Honda.

    keep em' coming!

Why the assumption that there is some sort of hatred?

There are many reasons I will not buy Honda.

The #1 being that there isnt a local dealer.

End of story. So either contribute something to the topic, or get the hell out.

Calm down. I did contribute something to your thread based on my personal experience. Not my fault your ignorance to a reputable and reliable auto maker gets in the way of making a wise decision.
