HELP! Oil leaking onto exhaust of my 3rd gen.

    Pending the condition of the timing cover gaskets that may very well be a viable option. Thought I read Ford recommending on the oil pan to go all the way around the oil pan but not circle the bolts. http://www.v8sho.com/SHO/oilpan.html Don't remember if this link is Ford's recommendation.

    There was no oil pan gasket on mine when I took it down. Someone attempted this before me and didn't go after the timing cover that I can see. Also haven't taken it off yet so that as well may be RTV. Definitely leaking.

    I hope the gaskets that sit in the crevices along the edges are reusable and I didn't know you could reuse them. Found the timing cover gasket for the crank but no luck on the thin ones that go in the recessed edges.

    If they are shot or it's all RTV I'll either try sitting it for an hour without torquing or make them like I aforementioned. Just know I have to do something as my patch will only last so long before it starts leaking bad again.

    I RTV'd the outiside up the front of Bank 1's side of the timing cover where I saw oil building and so far I have almost stopped the leak completely.

    Soon as I start the steering and suspension I am also going to tackle the timing cover and oil pan again. I'm determined to fix it!

    Don't machine surfaces or clean them up? I did use a wire brush on my drill to remove the old gasket maker. That what you meant?

    No don't scratched the already machined surfaces. I used Original Gunk Engine Degreaser, basically diesel fuel. It works the best at getting the silicone loose. with the small wire brush.

    Well hopefully I didn't damage anything. I know I was light with my strokes. Figures, I've always used a straight razor blade. The last 3 installs of this pan however were done with my drill and small wire wheel.

    Think maybe I should use some fine sand paper to smooth it out again or just leave it as is?

    Wire wheel would be fine, but would recommend aluminum or brass vs steel. But I personally only used the razer when doing my head gaskets and timing cover.

    Yeah these are a steel wire brush set that's advertised as good for any surface cleaning job. You have a 3rd gen? If so what did you use on your timing covers. Searching the web at present for me has been useless with exception to the crank seal. Can find that at some Ford dealerships.

    Some guy on Ebay is charging the same price in shipping as he is for that same gasket.

    When I get to my timing cover that is. It's after my new steering and suspension which tomorrow on those I begin installation. I'll be making gaskets if I can't find it.
