I have an 89' SHO since 1990, Y VIN. I've been told that the early Gen 1 came with a 9.25 flywheel friction surface diameter and that most early gen 1 cars had there flywheel upgraded to a 9.75 diameter at the factory. Is there any way to tell what I have without taking things apart? Thanks for any help. ct in Kentucky

The flywheels are the same in the 9 1/4 and 9 3/4 clutch setups. Even the ring gears are the same.

The pressure plates and clutch discs are different.

Visually, the 9 1/4 pressure plate looks like a metal fabrication, while the 9 3/4 unit looks like a pressed stamping.

Flywheels are all the same. The clutch is what changed, as noted above.

Do I understand then, from what you've said, that the 9.75 clutch kit should fit?

Yes. That's the one you want.

Do not get the smaller clutch.

Hey. The reason I asked this question is that I saw the following and someone said the same thing.

    Phoenix Friction Technical Bulletin
    TB003

Problem: Taurus SHO Clutch and Flywheel Match

    Clutch Kit Affected: 07-078

1989-90 Taurus SHO models were originally equipped with a 9¼” clutch. In October 1991, a redesigned clutch with a 9¾” diameter was installed to remedy complaints of slippage and premature failure. When replacing the clutch on the 1989 and 1990 models with an 07-078 kit, a 9¾” flywheel from Ford must be used.

    What do you all think???
