To all those SHO owners who new Ernie Groce (egroce11), just wanted to let you all know that our fellow beloved SHO owner passed away on Monday morning. Ernie was an avid SHO enthusiast who spend tons of time working on his race-car trying to break the Salt Flats land speed record in the F-Pro (production) naturally aspirated class.

The car came close a couple of times, but due to engine failures and most recently (driver) health issues, this feat would never come to fruition; although he came close. Instead he gets to sit shotgun in some of the fastest cars in the world as a guardian angel to those on the course.

Those who knew Ernie, please take a moment to remember him and his love for the SHO community.

Thoughts and Prayers go out to the Groce Family at this time.

Grave side service will be conduct Friday September 25, 2015 at 2 PM in Murray, UT (Mountain Standard Time).

Sympathies to the family. RIP, Ernie. Although, I hope there's a Salt Flats or two up there for you to tear up.

I considered Ernie a really good friend. I went and saw him just over a month ago. While he was on his respirator, and pretty much confined to the house, the man never lost his sense of humor. Rest in peace Ernie. You'll be missed.

So now, who is going to go pick up his car and break that record in his honor?

    My condolences.
Can anyone find some information on what record he was chasing; and other information?
Anyone who bases his passion on a SHO has to have an interesting story.

RIP Ernie. I really love the pictures and video in his obituary! That car sounds mean! I hope that someone will be able to keep chasing that record for him as well!

Ernie was a great man. Never got to know him on a personal level but the little I knew about the man was great. He was a kind person with a lot to say and full in inspiring information.
He had a passion for what he did and I think the whole car enthusiast community suffered a loss today.

I think there needs to be something in his honor at the next convention. Maybe a Egroce award or something.

Maybe like a donation towards a fund or something. I'd hate to think he will be forgotten

So sad. I was not aware that his health had declined so far. Prayers for his loved ones as they deal with this loss.

I could not get the video to run, open new pictures or enlarge the 3 pictures that were displayed.
Is there a trick to this that I do not know?
I looked up the Bonneville Salt Flats classes, but got nothing specific for F- Prod.
I don't know much about Ernie yet.

He was going for the 167mph F-Prod record. Ransom drove the car, and on the first pass went faster than that, but on the second pass the engine went due to the oil filter relocation kit (keep your filter where it is, it's plenty good!) He had the motor rebuilt, dyno'd and everything, and it's pretty much ready to go. But then he had a stroke. He came down to see his son here in California, and while he seemed OK, something was off. We went to Irwindale that night to catch the races, and he really enjoyed himself. I got busy, and hadn't called him for awhile, and then 6 months ago, he told me about his cancer. I drove up there, and spent a very enjoyable 4-5 hours with him. In such a dire situation, he still had his sense of humor, we reminisced about the times on the flats, BBQs at his place, etc. He had to lay down so that's when I took off. Really going to miss him. He reflected what the SHO community by in large is. Great people with a silly hobby, lol.

Sean, if you find out that the family is wanting to pass on his SHO legacy to one of the community, please let us know. His car needs to be kept intact and it needs to break the record.

Wow, 167 is a big number to beat.
What would you have to do to get that kind of top speed? Can you approach the red line in 5th gear, or is this an automatic?
This would be an accomplishment, to say the least.

It's an 89, manual. I believe the redline is 8200rpm and the car has taller tires, so it's possible the car could still do it in 4th gear. That engine has a crazy amount of work done to it, and is very capable of meeting this challenge.

iirc, he had destroked it so it would run around 10k rpm.

What a great story on the car.
    Thanks for the information.
I don't know how "stock" the car has to be, but a 26 year old car challenging a land speed record is extraordinary.
It would be nice if a family member (or anyone, for that matter) kept this challenge going.

He was the guy i respected most here. Comes in forum shoots up this sick video on the flats , with this engine from hell , no one ever heard a sho scream like this in 100 years. Then shows up his buddy running a flats car , sho engine , carbed , distributor runs off a cam sprocket. That's how every new guy should come in this forum , like someone pulled the trigger of a shotgun pointed in your face. POW.

RIP buddy , when i cross over , you better have that thing running :)
