As you recall, we co-ordinated the last Quaife Automatic Torque Biasing Differential (ATBD) Group Buy.

We've been working with Autotech (Quaife America) over the last several months about doing another group buy for the SHO 5-speed MTX, and have selected their Wavetrac ATBD for our next group buy – we really like the differential, and we are the company they would like to sell this unit for them, exclusively. There are two reasons we like it – features and price.

    Features:
We have done our own research and we are very excited about the Wavetrac. The Wavetrac is US designed AND US made by Autotech.

This diff is primarily gear-based torque biasing, but also has two additional features that set it apart from other gear-based torque biasing differentials (including the Quaife). The first and foremost is the Wave Design Center Pack. This feature gives the car traction even when one wheel has no traction at all. In a normal gear-based torque biasing differential, if one wheel has zero traction (on glare ice or one tire in the air), the diff behaves like an open differential, because it needs SOME traction at both wheels to bias the torque. The Wavetrac, on the other hand, has the Wave Design Center Pack that provides the bias when one tire is unloaded/has no traction. The second is that the Wavetrac has Interchangeable Friction Plates to provide controlled behaviour. This means that you can adjust the feel of the to suit your needs (the diff needs to be removed and disassembled to change the Friction Plates, of course). The bias itself is fixed in the range of 2.6-2.8:1 as this is set by the geometry of the unit’s internals.

Autotech's web page on the differential is here, and includes a video and a link to a data sheet, as well as detailed technical information and explanations that are worth the read (though our explanation of the bias ratio and the plates is more accurate than posted there – Autotech should be changing what they have written in the near future):

    http://www.autotechdriveline.com/a_wavdiff.shtml
    http://wavetrac.net/

Autotech is very excited with the positive feedback they have already received from Wavetracs already out in the field for other applications, including a 740+ WHP drag car. As with the Quaife, the warranty is lifetime, even when raced, and also transferable.

In fact, we are so excited and confident about the new features that we will be replacing the Quaifes in/for most, if not all, of our cars with the Wavetrac units, since they should perform better in winter driving when one-wheel-on-ice is very common, and it's a (noisy) nuisance when the Quaife goes 'open' in that situation. These Quaifes will be made available, of course. Please contact us if you are interested in a used unit, inspected and approved as 'good' by Quaife America.

We have also been working with Autotech to customize the Wavetrac MTX SHO application to make it more user-friendly, including sizing it for easy-to-find imperial bolts, instead of having to use metric bolts (or filed down imperial ones). As with the Quaife, it is compatible with Dextron III and Dextron IV transmission fluids, such as Redline D4.

    Price:
Though the Quaife and the Wavetrac have the same list price of $1495, we are able to offer better pricing for the Wavetrac, even at the same batch sizes. Since it is US-made, there is no duty to import one into Canada (another new benefit).

Here is how the pricing breaks down. All prices include delivery to the US 48 states and Canada (taxes are extra for Canadians, depending on the province of delivery, but there is no duty, unlike the Quaife). There is a deposit required on our part to get this going, and we are offering a deep discount for those that can help us out with that deposit.

    For those that can pay:
100% by December 15th, we will offer US$1295 (cheque/money order only, see below)
50% by January 15th, we will offer US$1345
After January 15th, the pricing will be US$1395

A deposit of 10% at any time until they are sold out is also available to hold a unit. Deposits will hold the diff for up to 6 months after they are ready for delivery, so you can ‘hold’ a diff for you until you are ready to pay the balance. Deposits are non-refundable, but they are transferable. This means if you sell your car or something else happens that you no longer need or can’t take the diff, you can transfer your deposit to another party (they pay you for your deposit) and then they pay the balance and take delivery. If you need a diff more than a year later, please e-mail us. Links to place deposits are at the end of the web page.

Once there are ~10 units left from the run, we will update this group buy thread and this page with the units remaining, so if you want a unit and HAVEN’T yet placed a deposit, you can do so before the batch is sold out.

as of: 11/16/08 – More than 10 units remaining.

For the deposits, we will also be taking cheques (including credit card cheques). For the 100% $1295 deposit only, the ONLY method of payment will be a cheque (including a PayPal e-cheque) - instant transfers and credit card payments for $1295 will be billed an extra $25 to cover some of the extra PayPal fees, as the PayPal fees for those payment types are just too high for that low price. However, by popular request, we have added an option for a credit card funded/instant transfer PayPal 100% payment that allows us to recover the majority of the PayPal fees, for a total of $1320. The remaining deposit options can be paid as you wish.

The group buy starts now (November 15th) with units expected to be available for delivery within 4 months, i.e. March 15th. We expect to test a prototype within 2 months.

    Taurus ATX Application
We have also completed the groundwork for a Wavetrac for the Taurus ATX. This applies to the following Taurus transmissions: AXOD, AXODE, AX4S, AX4N and 4F50N. As far as we know, this covers every Automatic Taurus ever built (and a few other Ford models). Pricing and features are the same for the ATX units as they are for the MTX units. The stock sun, planetary and ring gears are re-used. Since we know that it will take quite a while to gather enough serious interest (30+ paying customers), we are offering a much lower deposit for the ATX unit of $50, and we plan to start that group buy officially (i.e. accept the larger deposits and place the order) once we receive 30 deposits. If we fail to get 30 deposits within a year, then we will look at cancelling the ATX group buy. If the ATX group buy is cancelled, then these ATX deposits are refundable. Otherwise, if the ATX group buy goes ahead, they are non-refundable (but are transferable), as with the MTX units.

Thanks to everyone for your patience and support - we are excited to get these units on the road!

Thank you for all the hard work Josh. If someone is willing to do all the hard work for this community at almost no financial gain then I surely hope the community can make all the hard work worth it.

I myself, Won't be buying one because I already have a Quaife, However I surely hope the rest of jump at this opportunity to buy a superior diff. Thanks again Josh.

By request, we have added a 100% credit card option - this paragraph was updated:

The remaining deposit options can be paid as you wish.

    Hi Josh,

You mentioned the Quaife making some horrible noise when on a glare ice situation. Does this cause damage to the unit? Why does it make this noise?

This obviously suggests if one is buying a diff for poor weather driving the Wavetech is preferable and the Quaife would be a better choice for a track car or a fair weather thrasher, yes?

I'm not aware of any damage from that. I believe the noise is from the pinions spinning madly in their bores when unloaded.

I'd say that the Wavetrac is better for foul-weather, and they are equivalent for good weather/track. The Wavetrac might actually be more agressive in track use, which might be an advantage, depending on the user.

IMHO, the only thing 'better' about the Quaife at this point is that we 'know' it works exactly as it does. Once the Wavetrac is proven, I believe it will be regarded as a superior part (which is why we are working on replacing all our Quaifes).

We have 5 ATX interest deposits so far, and need 30+ to 'start', so the timing just depends on how quickly the next 25 people jump on board. (You know who you are, lol) :)

    Update:

Things have been going a little slower than anticipcated with holidays and such, so we've moved all our dates to be 2 months later.

This means that the 100% deposit expires this weekend, so if you were hoping to catch that ship, it's about to sail! :)

Actually, at this point I'm seriously considering whether I should pull out. I'm planning on trading my ATX in for an EcoSHO so I won't really need it...
