I hear you can use an ecu from a gen2 sho and will work plug and play in my 90 with better computer programming. Is true? Theres a nice 95 sho mtx in the junkyard waiting for the pickins!

If so, anyone know the better programming I could expect.

As far as I know, it does not add any performance gains, its mostly popular if you wanted to add a chip or lpm to it. But by itself its just not worth swapping over.

It will work but you wont gain anything for it.

X2J's fetch about $40 on ebay.
So it depends how much the yard charges for it.

Today cleaned out the entire intake, dissassembled, reassembled. Changed out all those little hoses with new ones from shosource. All fit great. Put new accel wireset on, the X2J computer from a 93 sho manual.

Started a little rough. Couldn't idle very well. Found out hard way can't use a different IAC. Cleaned old one from 90 and put in. Idle was still a little rough but smoothed out to perfect.

Drove it, what a difference!! Not so much in performance. Speedwise was abt the same. But smoothness a definite notice. I have digital dash and notice the gas milage at any point higher then with the 90 computer. I dont think cleaning out the manifold made that much a difference as what the ECU swap did. It controls the rpm much better, especially during shifts. Idles much better especially when slowing down, doesn't go up and down at all, stays smooth. Doesn't seem to stall as easily or drop rpm suddenly when accelerating normally. With 90 computer had to accel a little harsh to get it moving. Have a stage 1. When decelerating from say any speed all the way down to 35, instant mpg stays at 99mpg. Old 90 computer would give a number usually between 65mpg and 95 mpg. usually never at 99. Meaning its not putting fuel in the engine when your decelerating. Saves brakes and gas. An ecu swap to a X2J is definitely worth it in my opinion.

With all that positive comes the negative, my sho still does the same thing, cuts off every now and then. Mostly during heavy acceleration. Its so annoying!!

The ECU had nothing to do with that.

I've been driving the that specific SHO with the same engine and ecu for almost 4 years. I know how it drove and what it felt like at any given situation. When I swapped the ecu, I definitely notice a difference. The car is not faster then it was, at least not noticably. But like someone told me, the numbers are definitely better and computer adjusts itself better. My last ecu had a hard time keeping a steady idle when I put aluminum flywheel and stage1 clutch on, and it wasn't the IAC, cause I'm using the same one as before. The intake wasn't very dirty anyways, don't think that made much difference.

Its in your head.. im telling you.. the factory tune is exactly the same.. all I remember is its got a faster processor and easier to use lpm's and tuning programs

many have said it runs smoother... that much i believe.. as for anything else i doubt it..

but yes for anyone in the future you can use any MTX computer

The previously poorer performance and hunting idle was likely a vac leak and cured by replacing the hoses. Shutting down at WOT....What MAF are you running, and have you cleaned your MAF filament ?

BTW the X2J ended up dying years ago, just stopped working out of no where. Took me a while to figure out why the car wouldn't run anymore. Was pcm. Had to put old one from 90 back in and to this day still works. go figure
