No, I did not try a regulator. I did try a few resistors & caps (don't remember the values of the components I tried) on the + side to the DRL...
The Panavise VSM mount is the best option I've found.

There could be more to it than just the DC voltage. If there is an AC component (noise) present that could be a factor.
