I'm looking to import a 96 Wagon converted to a SHO to the US. All is well except for the EPA, who says this can never be imported due to the modifications. Anybody have any idea's how to make the EPA happy? Canadian emissions tests don't count apparently.

I never would have told them that there were any mods done. Usually all you need is a notarized letter from the dealer or manufacturer stating that the vehicle met/meets all US FMVSS and emissions standards and has a MPH cluster.

If the car is still registered and insured in Canada and can be driven across the border, once the car is in the US you could bypass the feds altogether and just deal with your state DMV. Not the most legal or ethical route, but I have seen it done.

if its converted into a sho wagon using sho parts from the same model year sho, or later, it technicly passes the epa's requirements, as long as EVERYTHING is installed and operating properly.

getting them to realize this is a different matter.

What color is this wagon?? There was a few rumors of some being built, or maybe slapped together, should I say. Some of the original SHO gurus may know who I speak of.....

I think I know the car. If I am not mistaken it's silver, the job is not a hack job it was done very well and it looks great. And I think I have its sub frame in my car.

That's sweet! :dribble: I hope you can get it into the states.

If you drive it across, and depending on where it is in Ontario, you could bring it across on the Algonac ferry, there's very little traffic and very few questions asked. I'm not sure how it would work if the car was not registered to you though. Do you think the original owner would bring it across for you?

if its the silver wagon in the link above, the vehical is still a SHO on paper. this is becaus ethe SHO vin would have came with the SHO front clip, making it a sho with a wagon body, instead of a wagon with a SHO engine

since the bodywork has nothing to do with emmissions, the only things that should effect the EPA ******** would be the mods done to the vehical

Pull the chip, thow on a stock airbox, dont mention the exhaust, and do w/e else needs to be done for a visual inspection, and go explain why the car is emmissions legal despite the mods

It's not the half-SHO, half-SLO V8 wagon, this is a V8 drivetrain into a SLO wagon swap.

What you have to do is prove the engine was offered in the Taurus model, and that the engine in your car is the same model year or newer, and then prove the car has a fully functioning emissions system.

do the v8 engines have serial numbers that will show what model year its out of ? that would really help.

Just a sequential number on the timing cover, no VIN IIRC. However, if the PCM is from the same SHO that the engine is from, the VIN is stored in the PCM.
