Looking at some Nitto NT-01's in 17" size. The only acceptable 17" sizes are:
225/45/17
235/40/17
These will be mounted on 8" rims.

Currently I have 225/50/17 for my street tires which is .3" shorter than a bone stock 215/60/16.

The 225/45/17 would be .9" shorter than a 225/50/17 and 1.2" shorter than a bone stock 215/60/16.

The 235/40/17 would be 1.5" shorter than 225/50/17 and 1.8" shorter than a bone stock 215/60/16.

Other than speedo accuracy is there any reason I should shy away from such a low profile 40 series tire?
Is 225 on an 8" rim acceptable?

I've heard good things about the NT-01s. Out of curiosity, what 8" wheels are the tires going on? Any reason you don't want to use a 245/45/17? Out of your two choices, I'd lean towards the 225/45/17 for a little more sidewall. They'd probably also be a better fit for the wheel.

I think they do, it just takes some care with the fenders. Time to get the baseball bat out and roll 'em if you haven't yet (at least, there may be a little more that you have to do).

Yea, youd have to space them out in the front, and mangle your fenders in the rear. Id go 235. Even then, you still may have to modify.

There should be a table on the manufacturers website that will tell you what width rim to use, and what the tire width will be. I've heard of some 225 R-compounds that measure out to be more like a 245.

There shouldn't be any front spacing problems, as the suspension and strut geometry is no different on a GenI than a GenII.

Lots of folks have run 245s on GenIs.

I'd go with the 225, since you could potentially start running into weird gearing issues with the shorter diameter of the 235/40.

The 235/40 puts you at an actual 57 at an indicated 60 vs 225/55/16(a fairly close to stock diameter replacement).

Like Steve(Sinister) said though, check the Nitto site and see what they say the actual tire measures out to. The Bruce Boys(haha I like that) found that the Hoosiers run extremely wide compared to the Kumhos of the same size.

Ok I need some help with these terms/numbers. I can find data for overall width, but the "rim width measured on" is different. Does that matter?
So right now I have 225/50/16 Avon Tech R's, here is their data:
Measureing Rim Width: 6"
Section Width 9.3"
Tread Width: 8.7

The Nitto NT01 245/45/17:
Measuring Rim Width 8"
Dimensions Overall Width: 9.72

NT01 225/45/17
Measuring Rim Width 7.5"
Dimensions Overall Width: 8.86"

more rubber, more HP.....
What offset are your new 8" rims?

I have 17x8's w/ 245-40's on my Gen1 with 38mm offset, overall width of tire 9.6". The tire comes pretty close to touching the rear strut (can't fit half my pinkie finger in the gap). Any offset larger than that would be pushing it, especially with a 9.72" overall tire width.

I did have to cut the lip off the fender for them to clear, too. Rolling the lip was not enough.

245/45/17s on a gen 1 here. no mods to thre front and a thin spacer in the rear (just to make sure it doesn't touch the strut) oh, and allot of rear fender hacking.

FWIW, I run a spacer on the rear as well (GenII) when I run the Borbets. I don't need them with the Snypers and IIRC they're even the same offset. The tire makes a difference as well; I get a bit less clearance with the Toyos than I did with the Yokos.

This stuff always takes some fiddling around. The benefits should be worth it, though.

I think its a 40 or 42 offset. The seller wasn't sure. I will see if I can nail down the offset.

Your right I know. A larger offset is what would cause such a problem in the front. I guess 38-40mm is what you want. I remember mounting 42mm offset MM2 Miglias on a gen1 with strut clearance issues, then directly mounting them on a gen2, and they cleared. There may of been minor differences besides the geometry being the same.
