It's either that or a loose contact somewhere.

Yeah but I was checking the grounds and other contacts before I pulled the relay under the dash and they looked fineIt's either that or a loose contact somewhere.
Ok I will disconnect itI had the same issue a few months ago on my wagon and learned the auto delay switch was shot. The head lights were going on and off and by moving the delay switch up or down they were intermittently working. In a few days It shorted out and drained the battery. Before changing the manual headlight switch I suggest you pull out the auto delay switch (pulls right out) and disconnect it. I Think Your manual light switch should turn on your headlights lights with it disconnected. I replaced the delay switch assembly with a used replacement from Dan Barbush and it’s all back to normal. Good luck, Mike
okSmell for burning from switch, a lot goes through it.
Does the plastic surround just pop out once screws are taking out or do I just have to finagle it?Had the same exact problem with my Gen 1, turned out to be the headlight switch, replaced it for like $16 years ago and not one problem since. Piece of cake to swap out.
Been so long that I don't remember...lol, I do remember that it only took me like an hour to change, all that time not driving at night because I never knew when they would turn off, for a simple fix. Hopefully this is all you need, good luck!Does the plastic surround just pop out once screws are taking out or do I just have to finagle it?

I tried that and yea they were still acting upThe delay switch is held in place by two strap tension straps on each side. Remove with a plastic pry bar or a flat putty knife/Scraper. Pops right out. Remove the electrical connector and see if the headlights operate without it connected. Easy Pezzy.
did you try checking the headlight switch yet, the switch k n o b pulls off and there is a nut holding it in place. the connector is known to melt and cause issuesI tried that and yea they were still acting up
