Is anyone else ever heard of the ac/heating unit turning itself on & off by itself? I’m just driving along on a hot day & it shuts off & will turn on randomly. If I want it on I have to use the led screen to turn it on because when it’s weirding out the black touch bar don’t respond. But even using the led screen to turn it on doesn’t last it still does what it wants when it wants. Could it be a sensor? I don’t mind repairing my own car I was just curious if this has happened to anyone else?

Do you have access to a code scanner? It would be worth a look to see if your ac system has any codes in pending or stored to shed light.

Could be the fan resistor is causing the fan to stop running. Just replaced one on my wifes XC90.

Safe to assume it's a SHO? What year, how many miles on it? Could be low refrigerant, could be faulty HVAC module, or a bad compressor. Hopefully there are codes present to guide the diagnosis.

It sounds like your Front Control Interface Module is going wonky. He says the black touch bar (fcim) is inoperative and has to use the touchscreen (front display interface module) to get the a/c to come on.

So my question is if anything on the FCIM (below the touchscresn) is operational. Do your passenger windows work? Any Blind Spot Fault messages?

Everything in the car operates as normal.(windows, radio, defroster, etc) When this happens the only way I can turn it on is through the touch screen. We fight you see I really want to stay cool but she wants me to be humble so she turns it off & then I just push the touch screen to turn it back on . It runs for a minute or two or sometimes it doesn’t shut off at all. She’s weird like that like I said she wants me to stay humble I guess. Such a bitch.

Also I don’t think it’s low on refrigerant because when it runs it blows cold. Just hit 80k. Everything in the car work great other than this super annoying.

@Johnbigdog when the controls under the touch screen go out the only thing that works is the rear defroster

Ok. So the HVAC operates, the A/C turn off. Blower stays on. I suspect this is in auto temp control and manual temp control? In auto the compressor will turn on and off on its own.

There. Would very well be an input fault.

I always use the auto function. That’s what I have thought it might be, but is this a sensor I can replace? I really don’t want to replace that whole unit.

As Signal13 and SHOdded noted above, DTCs may point to a direction. PID data will help too. (Peramater IDentification is what the module sees) Checking high and low side pressures. I wouldn't say a module is bad right o way with how you are describing.

Might be worth cleaning the incabin temp sensor located on the driverside dash to the right and below the steering wheel.

It really sounds like a fan resistor to me. I don't know how easy access is on the Taurus. On the XC90 it was a B____H. If it is easy on the Taurus, try that first. Fan resistors aren't very expensive.

@SHOdded I blew the sensor out w/ some air. There was a lot of dust in there but the problem still carries on...

From what I'm picking up from what the O.P is putting down, the blower is always blowing. The temperature gets warmer and it is noticed the A/C indicator light above the button is out.

So... The fan is ruled out.

And if the fan goes out, the car has a evaporator temp sensor to monitor the evaporator for freezing. If the blower goes out I don't know if the the a/c button will turn off.

Ok, that makes sense.
