Does anyone run a fuel additive like Boostane or any of the hundreds of others on the market?

That has nothing to do with brand and everything to do with octane. Off-brand 93 will perform better than Shell 87.I ran Shell 87 in a Honda I had a while ago. Ran that sucker for 200k miles, never had a check engine light come on, never had an issue with the engine. Decided I would stick with Shell for all my vehicles. My current fleet runs premium and NEVER sees anything but Shell. I was driving the SHO down from Atlanta and my aunt had put some off brand 87 gas in the car and it ran like SH**. No power, bucking/shaking, etc. Ran that tank damn near empty, stopped at Shell and put 93 back in it, all power restored almost immediately.
The main thing different about top-tier gas is that it comes with detergent added which will keep your injectors and valves cleaner. Of course DI engines don't benefit as much from it.
Have you heard of a Ford-approved steam clean procedure for baked on carbon? Supposedly do not have to pull the heads for this one.
There is little to no data in the advertising the oil companies do about detergents in fuel when it comes to direct injection. I guess you would have to read SAE technical papers to glean anything.
Just a fragment of a conversation overheard while in the shop. So rumor-like you might say about the steamcleaning, LOL.
As far as clean fuel, we assume that top tier gas is clean from contaminants such as rust, water, etc. However do the detergents create dirty fuel as a sideeffect, i.e., does fuel not burn as cleanly as it could without the detergents, that is a separate matter.
Pennzoil claims to create "clean" engine oil using natural gas as the source, so if that is true, it should not only help keep the engine clean but the combustion chamber as well when the PCV fumes are burnt off.

Absolutely not. Shell 93 is a "special" breed of gas IMHO. It makes a noticeable difference from 87 even on our Fusion Sport (3.5 NA). But I would definitely run a tune if I ran premium gasSo am I wasting my money running Shell 93 octane?
