that would just allow more air moving in the crossover tube, which is not needed.

Er, not really...

The crossover tube serves the same purpose as an H-pipe in a dual exhaust. Its job is simply to equalize pressure pulses between the two tanks. If everything is working right, very little air should be flowing through the crossover tube.

No.

Pressure equalization.

To simplify, the crossover tube makes sure that the air pressure inside of the plenum tanks is consistent... is the same between the two. The crossover tube does nothing to admit additional air into the intake.

You can carefully grind out the ridge in the middle if you want.
It would be more productive to do the 6 snakes instead of the crossover.

if I may...

a few years back, some folks in north carolina thought power could be had by custom building a tubular steel crossover tube. I volunteered my 92 as a test bench, and a few weeks later I received a weld spatter covered home-built crossover tube. It used a couple of pieces of coolant hose to mate up with the rest of the intake and looked like complete dog shit, but being completely open, it removed any possibility of a restriction on that end.

long story short, it didn't do shit, and I can't for the life of me remember what happened to it.

has anyone ever tried capping off the ends of the plenums to see if it would be any sort of benefit/detriment?

as I recall, the first prototype SHO engine did not have the crossover tube.

they added it because they thought it was important or because the styling guys liked the look - take your pick.
